Hi, I thought I should explain this fic. It's actually kind of an epilogue type thing for another fic I wrote sometime ago, which is quite long and needs some serious editing before I even begin to think about posting it anywhere and not dying of shame. So, basically the story went that Grissom found a girl who was a material witness to the murder of her parents. She didn't talk and attatched herself to Grissom. The story ends with her being taken away to be put in a foster home. She calls Grissom and tells him that he can adopt her, because hehad offered to do so. She named herself Zoe Jane. So, this story, as you can see, follows that one, hope you like.

Sweet Zoe Jane by: Staind

Grissom walked into the lab, surprised by the fact that he wasn't able to hear Greg's music from clear down the hall. Once he had passed through the lab door he understood why, Greg had a softer, mellower kind of music on today. Grissom didn't even have to turn it down to speak to the brightly coloured lab tech. Grissom asked for the results on some fibers he had dropped of earlier and Greg began digging through the papers on his desk. Grissom noticed that the desk was completely covered in files and some of the stacks were actually taller than Greg. While Greg was searching Grissom turned his attention to the music. The CD was changing tracks and Grissom was actually enjoying the introduction to the next song, then the lyrics started.

Well I want you to notice

To notice when I'm not around

I know that your eyes see straight through me

And speak to me without a sound

At first Grissom started to ignore it, putting it off as a typical guy likes girl rock song, but something kept him listening.

I want to hold you

Protect you from all of the things I've already endured

I want to show you

Show you all the things that this life has in store for you

I'll always love you

The way that a father should love his daughter

Grissom was surprised, he didn't know of many songs to or about the artist's child. Inspired yes, about no.

When I walked out this morning

I cried as I walked to the door

I cried about how long I'd be away for

I cried about leaving you all alone

Grissom was starting to identify with the song, surprised by how closely it mirrored his own feelings.

I want to hold you

Protect you from all of the things I've already endured

And I want to show you

Show you all the things that this life has in store for you

I'll always love you

The way that a father should love his daughter

Grissom watched as Greg searched for the results but his mind was on Zoe, wondering what she was doing.

Sweet Zoe Jane

Sweet Zoe Jane

Grissom's jaw dropped, figuratively that is. Outwardly he showed no sign that he was listening to the music but inwardly he was wondering at the coincidence.

So I wanted to say this

Cause I wouldn't know where to begin

To explain to you what I have been through

To explain where your daddy has been

I want to hold you

Protect you from all of the things I've already endured

And I want to show you

Show you all the things that this life has in store for you

I'll always love you

The way that a father should love his daughter

Greg found the report finally, digging it out from the middle of the highest stack, amazingly without knocking anything down. Greg read it, it was negative so now Grissom would have to go back to the scene to find what he was missing.

Sweet Zoe Jane

Sweet Zoe Jane

"Greg?"

Greg looked up, startled, he thought Grissom had already left. "Yeah? Is something wrong with the results?"

Grissom shook his head. "No, what's the name of this album?"

Greg Sanders frowned. "14 Shades of Gray, by Staind. Why?"

Grissom shrugged. "Just wondered."

He exited, leaving Greg shaking his head at Grissom's unpredictably.

Grissom stopped at a record shop on the way home, to pick up a present for Zoe.
