green and gold and slashed with red
SUMMARY: In the aftermath, Annie Cresta is still alive, still going through the motions, and still missing Finnick.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: This is just a really short drabble I cooked up in about ten minutes. Enjoy and review.
Annie is lonely. She is alive, but she feels like she shouldn't be.
Annie still gets confused sometimes. She sees Finnick's eyes everywhere (such a marvelous shade of green) and she hears his voice in the soft lapping of waves.
Annie? Is that you, Annie?
Annie gets lost, occasionally. At first, it was scary, being in one place and then another and not knowing why or how. Now, Annie closes her eyes (ocean eyes, she'll hear) and hope to be whisked away.
Come home, Annie. I've missed you, Annie.
On her good days, Annie will write letter to Finnick. Sometimes they're short, just little tidbits of news about the baby, the weather or odd bits of shells she finds on the beach. Then, she'll put the letters into a bottle and toss it out to sea because the sea is green and Finnick's eyes are green and she can pretend that she's seeing her words reflected in his eyes.
She thinks Finnick would like that.
On her bad days, Annie is back in the Games. She's hiding and she can hear them. The screams, that is. It's better than the silence though. And the water and that feeling that I'm not going to make it, I'm going to die and so much blood. Annie feels like she's drowning in the blood and she can't swim because someone's pulling her down and when she looks, she sees wiry golden hair and green eyes and—
That's usually when she wakes up.
Annie feels scared. She worries that she won't be a good mom and baby Finn will grow to hate her. Baby Finn can't hate her. He's the only piece of Finnick she has left.
Annie gets angry a lot too. Some days, she'll curse and throw things. Mrs. Everdeen always gets worried when that happens.
Annie likes Mrs. Everdeen, but feels sorry for her. Mrs. Everdeen is nice, however and she helps Annie take care of Fin.
(Annie wonders if Mrs. Everdeen feels sad too. About Katniss, that is. Prim's death was sad, but Katniss is alive and dead at the same time. In the deepest, darkest part of her mind, Annie thinks Mrs. Everdeen is selfish, but she'll never say it aloud. Mrs. Everdeen is nice.)
When Annie closes her eyes at night, she sees green and gold and pronged silver tridents and blood-streaked water. She sees the Capitol, all shining and beautiful and terrible.
When Annie closes her eyes at night, she sees Finnick.
Annie? Come to me, Annie. I love you.
