A Caged Bird's Despair
(A poem for Glen Baskerville)
When hope is not enough,
You somehow find the means
To fashion flesh and feathers
From dark and lonely dreams.
That beautiful melody;
In your mind it still sings.
Your fingers found the notes
And gave the song new wings.
It was easy for you –
Great master of your kind
To suffuse the air with song
From your sorrowful mind.
But one thing you can't do
And it puts you in a rage;
You cannot find escape
From this heavy-hearted cage.
The five black-winged chains
Inside of you reside.
They demonstrate the feelings
That you'd prefer to hide.
Raven summons pathways
To travel far and near,
Reflecting your desire to
Be anywhere but here.
Gryphon's intense power
Threatens with solemn fear
Born from wrong-headedness
Of what should be most dear.
Jabberwocky can rend
One's very being with its teeth,
And show the ruinous ardor
That's buried underneath.
Dodo's elusive tricks
Hide memories and replace
The living soul inside you
With a vacant, false face.
Owl is most mysterious
But sees with each large eye
How much you're truly longing
To die…
If you cannot fly.
Your people, they love you
Much more than words can say,
But your heart broods on the past,
And binds your soul away.
If your heart just reaches
For only one who's dear,
Then you bar yourself from some
Who might wish to be near.
When wings beat in anger,
And feathers fall aground,
You can't erase the memory
Of that nostalgic sound.
Abyss is a prison,
Yes – a grave and a tomb
More desolate and confined
Than that girl in her room.
That girl you imprisoned
In the tall, lonely tower,
You wanted for her kinship
To that creative power.
With toys and dolls you tried
To make her prison a nest,
But the hands of time will tell
If your soul can ever rest.
