Chocolate Sisters

Emily had been 'released' from the ARC, that is, Lester finally said she could leave for short trips. So, Jess took her to lunch. She paid, and looked around for Emily. She found her next door, at the newsagent, looking at shelves of chocolate.

"In my...day, chocolate was not wrapped. It came loose, in bars or small boxes. We had powdered chocolate, and chocolate drinks," said Emily.

"That's my kind of history, sweet, yummy, and chocolate," said Jess.

Emily smiled, picking up a wrapped bar. "Milk chocolate with toffee bits and rose petals," she read off the bar. Turning to Jess, she asked, "Rose petals?"

Jess shrugged. "Plain chocolate won't do these days. So many companies make and sell it. Then there are smaller, gourmet makers. They have to get creative."

Emily nodded. She read more labels. "Milk chocolate with caramel and hazelnuts. White chocolate with swirls of raspberry and almond. Dark chocolate: 86% cacao. I do not understand."

Jess smiled. "Chocolate is getting snooty. Chocolate comes from the cacao bean..."

"It comes from the cocoa bean Jess."

"Yes, Emily. Snooty chocolatiers like to pronounce it cuh-cow, or other ways, any how, it comes from the bean, and they like to say how much actual cocoa stuff is in it. The more the better, so they think."

"That would make it incredibly bitter."

"It does. Wow, Emily. You know your chocolate."

Emily smiled. "It was one of the few pleasures in my life."

Jess nodded. "I don't think I could get through the day without it." Jess pointed to the many chocolate bars. "Choose a couple. My treat."

Emily frowned. "I do not know which to select."

Jess smiled. "Oh, in that case..." she said, grabbing bars. "A couple dark, a couple milk, a few fruit and nut, some white chocolate..."

"What is white chocolate?"

Jess sighed. "Technically, it's not chocolate, it's cocoa butter, or something. I don't know. It has chocolate in the name, so I like it."

"But you do not like orange chocolate."

''That's different. They just stuck orange into perfectly good chocolate and ruined it."

Emily laughed. "I would like to try some orange, for myself."

"Fine. I've warned you. I accept no further responsibility." Jess grabbed some orange chocolate, holding it like it was a bio hazard.

Emily laughed. "Thank you."

Jess nodded. She carried a heap of candy bars to the counter. "Hold on," she said. "I seriously can't buy all this chocolate and not get some for myself. Be right back."

Emily nodded, smiling. Jess came back, carrying almost as many bars. "Ready."

Jess and Emily sat in the break room, giggling up a storm. "What's with them?" asked Becker.

Matt rolled his eyes, and pointed to the side of their table, and a pile of empty chocolate wrappers.

"Oh, boy," said Becker. "Jess in a sugar, chocolate rush, is bad enough, but add in Emily?" he shuddered.

Matt nodded. "Yep. Pray for an anomaly."

"I am, believe me."
