Once, in the olden times, there was an elven kingdom, its citizens mixed between winged elves, wizardly elves, and elves who preferred the natural wonders of the land. The ruler was a kind, if elderly king, who had gone childless (for elves are not nearly so fecund as Men) until he had grown quite aged even for an Elf. His beloved queen having beseeched him to secure the lineage despite her early death of a wasting illness, he had continued such efforts with such consorts as he found suitable, if only after a full century of mourning.
Even so, when at last he succumbed to the accumulated weight of millenia, he left only a child princess to take the throne. Grief stricken and unsure of her course, the little Elf girl prayed for guidance and a pony before the sun and moon, as one rose and the other set on either side of the sky her balcony opened to. Much to her surprise, a pinkish-white alicorn pony, of noble proportion and a multi-colored flowing mane and tail, appeared before her from a shaft of light.
The divine creature regarded her for a moment, while the princess was too filled with awe at her beauty and the power of her magical aura to speak a greeting. Then, the pony grinned. "So, I herd you like ponies?" she asked.
Roused from her daze, the elven lass lept to her feet, deciding that even if she couldn't get anyone to help with rulership at least she'd have a pony to cheer her up. "Hell yeah, PONIES!" the little princess shouted joyously.
Since as the current monarch her agreement went for the whole country, Celestia went ahead and turned them all into ponies, and also granted the request for someone to help with the business of ruling by making herself the elder sister of Pony Princess Luna.

Okay so like Equestria was originally this elf country right with flying elfs and elf wizards and normal woods elfs but then the old elf king died and left just a young princess to take over and Celestia showed up and said "So I herd u like ponies?" and she was all like "Hell yeah, PONIES!" So Trollestia turned everyone into ponies and the little elf princess got turned into Luna and Celestia was her big sis.
