Mother
Carole stared at the photo of her son and smiled.
Finn was about 5 years old, learning how to ride a bike and smiling that beautiful angelic smile. Then Finn was 9 years old and holding a frog in his muddied hands, his smile ever present.
Carole continued to gaze at the pictures that were on the small table next to the coffin. There was only one that caught her attention. It was the one of Rachel and Finn at her wedding. With trembling fingers, she picked up the picture frame and ran her fingers over Finn's smiling face. Her tears fell and hit the glass frame.
Burt slid next to her and wrapped an arm around her waist and gave it a gentle squeeze. Carole rested her head against his shoulder. He didn't have to say anything but he always knew what she needed.
Setting the frame down, Carole smiled at her husband and he nodded in understanding. Giving her one last squeeze, Burt turned and searched for Kurt.
Carole turned and stared at the coffin. She bit her tongue to keep from crying out. She slowly took the few steps to peer inside. She looked down and more tears fell. Reaching out carefully she lightly caressed her son's cold cheek.
"Look at you…so handsome in your suit," Carole said, her lips trembling and tears falling freely. She lovingly brushed his bangs to the side. "So, so handsome…"
Then leaning down, Carole whispered her love for her son.
"I love you my sweet, sweet boy. You don't have to worry about me anymore…I'll be fine." Then looking over to where Rachel sat, Carole's heart broke all over again. Turning back to her son, she cupped his cheek and whispered once more, "We'll take good care of her. I promise."
Then placing her to fingers to her lips, Carole then placed them on Finn's forehead.
"I love you so much, honey. And I will always will."
Carole stepped back and again, Burt placed a comforting hand on the small of her back. Then the funeral director called out for those who haven't to say their last goodbyes. After 10 minutes, the funeral director called for the immediate family to step forward.
Carole looked back and motioned for Rachel to join them. Rachel looked surprised at first but sadly nodded and stood next to Carole who wrapped an arm around her.
Together, they watched as the funeral director slowly close the casket. Carole gave Rachel a squeeze as she felt the younger woman tremble. They all made their way out of the funeral home and watched as Finn's body was placed into the hearse.
Carole turned to Rachel and smiled sadly at her.
"Thank you. You made him so happy."
Rachel's lip trembled but nodded as fresh tears fell from her eyes. Carole embraced the woman who became like a daughter to her.
Together they would help each other get through this.
For Finn.
