This is a drabble that will be in my upcoming fanfic No One Like Macavity. Enjoy!
Disclaimer: If I owned Cats I'd be out playing with my very own Misto. Or Pouncival. Or Munkustrap... Obviously, since I'm not doing any of those things cries I don't own it.
Sleep
A Drabble by januaryfreeze92
I heard someone cry out and it was seconds later before I realized the cry was my own. My eyes snapped open, tears running down my cheeks like little rivers and I buried my face in his shoulder. He was already awake, of course. That scream of mine probably could wake up the dead - but if only it could.
Suddenly I started to hear. Munkustrap was holding me, asking all sorts of questions, shaking me gently. "I'm fine," I managed to choke out through my sobs and that silenced him. Everything was silent for a few moments, with the exception of my cries.
"What did you dream of?" he asked softly, not sure if he wanted to know. I could understand his hesitation perfectly well. We have both been through so much the past week or so.
"What if it was you who had to stay there?" I sobbed out, holding him to me tightly, my voice muffled because my face was buried in his shoulder. He wrapped his arms around me aswell. "Demeter, it wasn't me," he said softly and I could tell that he wished it was him. He was the Jellicle protector, another Jellicle shouldn't have been sacrificed for the sake of his mate.
I could feel some tears hit the top of my head and I didn't dare to look up, not wanting to hurt his pride. "Sweetheart, it wasn't your fault," I said softly, tightening my hold on him, "It was his choice to keep Macavity off of our tail - and you know he was the only one of us who could do it." My words were true, I could tell that even he knew that, but I didn't think he wanted to.
"I miss him," he said softly, as if admitting a horrible sin. I looked up at him, running my paw along his cheek. "We all do," I said and he nodded. "He was an amazing Jellicle -"
"And an amazing friend," I finished for him and he nodded again.
I turned my face up to the moon, the thing that all Jellicles felt the strongest connection to - stronger than even their mates. "Thank you," I whispered and Munkustrap said the same.
