It was 1996. The young child of Red awoke from his slumber upstairs in his bed. Today was the day that he would receive his first ever Pokémon! He was very excited to be meeting professor Oak, the world-renowned Pokémon scientist and overall great man. However, his friend, Gary, was also getting a Pokémon. Gary was rude and incompetent, and always thinking that he was the very best Pokémon trainer in the world. Red looked at the clock. 9:58. He was late to collect his Pokémon! He quickly put on his trainer outfit and his hat in the backwards position, and rushed downstairs. He shouted bye to his mum and was out the door very quickly. He was exited to begin his journey through the world of Pokémon!
After about a minute of running to Professor Oak's lab, Red checked his watch. He was just in time to choose his Pokémon! He entered the lab, and walked forward to Oak and Gary, who were both stood at the back of the lab. The lab was very simple, with a computer at the back of the room. Lying next to the computer were two oddly shaped electronic devices, almost like books, with empty pages inside. On the other side of the room was a table with three Pokéballs on it. The balls seemed to have signs underneath them. One said Bulbasaur, then Squirtle, and then Charmander. Red assumed that the signs told them what Pokémon was in the ball, as those were the main three that he knew.
"Hello there," said the Pokémon professor that stood before Red. "I see that you could make it in time to collect your first Pokémon." Oak was quite tall with cool white hair, and had his hand held out in front of him. Red shook his hand and looked at Gary. "Sup, loser?" he said. Red rolled his eyes and took it over his head. He was used to this. This was normal Gary Oak. The Professor then told red to "please choose a Pokémon. The Pokémon's name is underneath the ball, and choose wisely." Red looked over at the Pokéballs. He was worried about making the decision, in case he chose incorrectly and his Trainer career went horribly wrong. After about 2 minutes of thinking, Red finally decided to pick the fire Pokémon, Charmander. Then, it was Gary's turn. Red already knew what he was going to pick. Since he wanted to be the very best, and based on Red's decision, Gary picked Squirtle, the character with the type advantage. After Gary had picked his Pokémon, Red started to walk out to begin his adventure. However, he was stopped, by Gary. "Come on, let's battle to see whose Pokémon is stronger!"
And so they battled. Scratch after Scratch, blow for blow, Red's Charmander came out on top. Gary was shocked, and then claimed that he chose the wrong Pokémon. He then stormed out of the lab in a rage, his fists clenched and Slammed the door behind him. And after that, Red knew he had what it took to be a master trainer…
