"Are you going to glue goodly eyes to it?" Bilbo leaned forward, trying to get a good view of it. He had met people who did the same before.
"What? That's ridiculous!" Thorin pulled it away from him. "You can't touch it!" He stood tall, his hands wrapped defensively around his rock.
Bilbo looked him straight in the eye. Even for a sixth grader, Thorin was especially tall. "I'm not trying to touch it, Thorin; I just want to see it."
Thorin quickly held it in front of him. Just as quickly, it was gone. "There, you've seen it."
Bilbo sighed. "I'll start my homework."
To think, he had waited all week for this! It was supposed to have just been him, Thorin, and some math papers. For once in his life, Bilbo had actually been excited to study.
Well, at least it was better than his grandfather's lizard. His grandpa had it in a glass tank, the small creature red and angry looking. Neither Thorin or Bilbo liked to get anywhere near Smaug, let alone touch him (and his grandfather was always offering to let them).
Still, Bilbo did not want a rock coming between him and Thorin, no matter how shiny.
"I'll join you later." Thorin looked back down to the stone in his hand.
