Kairi knows Riku likes her as more than just a friend.
This is a fact.
It all began while they were still kids, when they didn't cry over losing their world but rather skinned knees; when instead of being consumed by the darkness, they consumed apple juice boxes until their breath smelled of apples.
She remembers every detail of that fateful day: the warm sand between her toes, how the palm trees swayed gently as if dancing, and how a ten year old Riku sat next to her on the beach, playing with the old glow in the dark band-aid on her elbow.
"Hey Riku, why don't we make a promise? Umm, if I'm ever in a bind…you come and save me, all right?" Kairi had said suddenly, interrupting the pleasant silence that had only been broken by a nearby seagull.
"W-what?" Riku's crystalline irises were plagued with confusion, which made the younger girl giggle.
"Whenever I'm in trouble, my hero will come and rescue me. I want to at least experiences that once, like the princesses in the stories!"
And oh, how the boy's confusion melted away into a look of complete adoration. Right then and there Kairi knew, just knew how much this boy with the oceanic eyes and silver hair cherished her.
"I promise Kai, that if you're ever in trouble, I'll come and save you. E-even if it means risking my life. I'll be your…knight in shining armor. Cross my heart and hope to die," Riku whispered with such an intensity it made Kairi shiver.
"Hey you guys, sorry I'm late! What did I miss?" Then Sora had run up, smiling and naïve to the scene which had occurred. Kairi recalled distinctly that Riku's cheeks turned scarlet and how over the years he seemed to forget the incident between them ever happened.

Six years later here Kairi stands before a man in leather, knowing death is at hand. He's scary as hell, with icy blue eyes and a scar that resembles an x. (X marks the spot)
"Come with me Kairi, and I'll take you to Sora. Don't you want that?" Saix murmurs, and oh how she wants to take his hand and see the boy that holds the key to her heart.
"Of course I do, but not with you!" Wrong answer. The creatures standing behind Saix ready their weapons and Kairi tries to think up the absolute perfect last words and-
Another man in leather appears and with incredible ease vanquishes the creatures that threaten to steal her heart away.
"You can take it from here, Riku." Namine smiles, before she herself vanishes without a trace.
"Riku? Riku?" Kairi repeats, saying the name she hasn't spoken is such a long time. Saix is thrown up against a wall, but only vanishes into a dark portal, with a smile upon his lips that will plague Kairi's dreams for the years to come. Her hero, (Riku?) hesitatingly looks at her for a moment, as if perhaps he wants to say something but decided against it, and steps into the ebony hued gateway.
"Wait! Just wait a second!" Kairi runs toward him, slowly pulls down his hood, and gasps and notices how incredibly pained the man looks. It's Ansem, yet it's not Ansem. There are so many questions without answers, but deep within her heart she knows that this is her Riku, her knight.
"…You promised… you promised that you'd come…when I was in trouble…m-my knight in shining armor…" Tears spring into Kairi's eyes, and she buries her face into his chest.
