Breaking Free

Azadellia was trapped. There was nothing but the infinite darkness that surrounded her, and a strangely familiar voice.

"Remember that time, in the cave, when you knew what all of those symbols meant?" the voice questioned, sounding as if it was near defeat. Azkadellia desperately wanted to nod her head yes, but she couldn't, because the Witch kept her as a prisoner, locked in the depths of her own mind.

"You were so smart back then.." the voice said. Inside her prison, Azkadellia recalled a hidden memory.

"Clever, how you tricked that tree to throw fruit at us'" said a young girl of 12 annuals. She was in a green dress, the top layer serving as a basket to gather the apples dropped on the ground.

"Az?" she heard her sister say. "Are there animals here?"

"Oh, sure!" Az replied. "There are lions, and tigers, and-"

"Oh my." she heard her sister murmur. Right in front of them was a huge bear, growling and walking towards them.

"DG, hold my hand! Nothing can hurt us if we're together!" Az shouted, clasping her sisters hand tightly.

A light shone from their joined hands, repelling the bear. The two looked at each other, uttering a sigh of relief.

"DG?" another voice called, startling Azkadellia out of her thoughts. The voice sounded meek and frightened, and it felt as if it was coming from her body. Then, it finally clicked. That was her voice, saying her sister's name. She tried to speak another word, but the Witch pushed her aside as she regained control.

The body that the two shared fidgeted, as the two occupants fought for control. "You're talking into the wind girl!" the Witch spat.

Azkadellia, trapped once more in the dark prison, tried to focus on happy memories. Suddenly, there was a bright flicker of green light. Az was able to make out the forms of a balcony, a girl, and the landscape stretching in one direction, before she was surrounded by darkness again. Light and darkness passed by her eyes in a blur, and she heard a voice.

"Az, grab my hand! I never should have let go! I'm sorry, Az, and I'll never let go again."

Azkadellia reached through the green light, clasping the other hand firmly. A light shined from their hands, and Azkadellia felt the other hand tugging hers away.

Looking behind her, Azkadellia saw the being which had occupied her body for the previous 15 annuals. The Witch, as the sisters watched, grew taller, and attempted to break the barrier of light around the sisters with her own dark magic. However, Azkadellia summoned up her happiest memory, and magic exploded from their joined hands. It hit the Witch, who roared in pain as she died, her body melting into a puddle of black liquid.

She cried softly as she sister hugged her fiercely. She was not the Witch, nor the Sorceress anymore. She was Azkadellia, the shy, studious princess, DG's sister, Az. She was home, with her family, where she belonged.
