Another Thomas rewrite, this time it's "Down the Mine" from Season 1, with added lines by tate310. Enjoy and comment.

One day, Thomas was at the junction when Gordon chuffed in with some freight cars.

"Pee-yew!" remarked Thomas, "what a funny smell! Can you smell a smell?"

"I can't smell a smell." said Annie.

"A funny, musty smell?" said Thomas.

"No one noticed it till you did!" grunted Gordon. "It must be yours!"

Not long ago, he had fallen into a dirty ditch. He knew that Thomas was teasing him about it.

"I think it's ditch water!" said Thomas to Annie and Clarabel.

Gordon snorted, but before he could answer, Thomas puffed quickly away.

Annie and Clarabel were quite surprised at what Thomas had said.

"He's dreadfully rude. We're so ashamed, we're so ashamed!"

But Thomas didn't care one bit.

"That was funny, that was funny!" he chuckled, feeling very pleased with himself.

Annie and Clarabel were deeply shocked. They had big respect for Gordon the big engine.

Thomas left the coaches at the station, and went off to the mine for some cars.

Long ago, miners digging for lead had made tunnels under the ground. They are strong enough to hold cars, but not engines. A large notice warns engines not to enter the area.

DANGER

ENGINES MUST

NOT PASS THIS

BOARD

"Silly old board!" thought Thomas. He had often tried to pass it, but never succeeded. But this morning, he had a plan.

The fireman went to throw the switch.

"Now for my plan!" exclaimed Thomas.

Bumping the cars fiercely, he knocked his driver off the footplate and onto the siding!

"Come back!" yelled his driver.

But it was no use, Thomas fell right down the mine!"

"Fire and smoke!" said Thomas. "I've sunk!"

And he was.

"Oh dear!" he thought. "I am a silly engine!"

Just then, Sir Topham Hatt arrived.

"And a very naughty one too!" he said. "I saw everything!"

"Please get me out! I won't do it again!"

"I'm not sure. We can't lift you out with a crane, the ground isn't firm enough, I wonder if Gordon can pull you out.

"Yes sir!" said Thomas. But he didn't want to meet Gordon just yet.

"Down a mine? Ha-ha-ha!" laughed Gordon. "What a joke!"

Soon, he arrived at the site of the accident.

"Don't worry Thomas, we'll have you out in a couple of puffs!"

Strong cables were fastened between the two engines.

"Are you ready?" said Sir Topham Hatt.

"Yes sir!" said the two engines!"

"Heave!"

It took longer than expected, but at last, Thomas was free!

"I'm sorry if I was cheeky!" said Thomas.

"It's alright. You made me laugh!" replied Gordon. "Plus, I'm in disgrace."

"So am I!" said Thomas.

"Let's form an alliance. You help me, and I'll help you!"

"Right you are!" agreed Thomas.

"Good!" rumbled Gordon.

And buffer to buffer, the two engines set off home.
