It was safe. 100 percent perfectly safe; it least that was what she kept trying to convince herself as taking cautious steps towards the Captain, Chief O'Brien, and Will. She was confident that they would never allow her to do this if it wasn't safe; especially Will.
"Ready Deanna?" The Captain asks. She nods, only looking at the first officer. "Remember in and out as quick as possible, get the book and press this button." They had discussed the plan a dozen times before, she knew it forward and backwards. "Chief?"
The three men step back as O'Brien fiddles with some controls and before she knows it she feels herself fading as the room moves out of focus and everything goes dark.
"Where did you come from!?" Weak as a half-stuffed doll Deanna opens her eyes to a handsome guy staring at her.
"What?" She was suppose to lie, tell any sort of story, but her brain was too jumbled.
"I said where did you come from? I was just in the back, I would have heard the door!" He had an adorable accent.
"Perhaps the sensor is off? Can you tell me where I can find Julian Bashir?"
"That's me." She hadn't realized how accurate the Chief would get with the time travel device. Perhaps if she paid attention to the scientific aspect it wouldn't be that surprising. "I need to borrow the book Long Tales Of Pumpkin Kings. Do you have it?" He just stares at her.
"Is this a joke? Who put you up to this O'Brien? It was O'Brien wasn't it?" Her O'Brien on Enterprise? Four years in the past? Perhaps.
"No it's not a joke, I read the book as a small girl and I heard you had a copy. Please?" They hadn't discussed what would happen if he refused and she knew he won't leave alone for longer than three seconds to allow her to snoop around.
"I'm not sure where it is." He was lying, even someone with no Betazoid could tell that, the skin from white to red as if dye had just been thrown on was the biggest tell.
"It would mean a lot to me and um my daughter! I told her about the section with the old drive-thru, gives her such a laugh."
"Long Tales Of Pumpkin Kings doesn't have any drive-thrus." Damn it! Wrong book.
"Really? I was so sure it did. Well anyways can I please have the book?"
"The book without the section your son is so excited about?"
"Yeah."
"Aha! You said you had a daughter! Now who are you and what are you doing here?!" Such a stupid slip up and suddenly felt like a nail being hammered and bent to death.
"Ok my name is Stella White and I can't tell you anything else." Any second now he'd call for security.
"You know what I don't have time for this! If you're not going to be candid with me than really whats the point Ms. White?"
"Just be spontaneous Julian." He sighs, looking back and forth to her and the crowded book shelf.
"Fine." He walks over and pulls off a thin spined book, handing it to her. Without thinking she leans forward and kisses him.
"I love you! Oh thank you."
"Um yeah don't mention it."
Three days later Deanna eats a triple scoop chocolate sundae, staring out the window watching the equinox light show, along with half the ship it seemed.
"We were able to change it. Thanks to you." Without being invited Will pulls out a seat on the other side of the table.
"Glad I could help. So the chip was stuck between the pages?"
"Between pages 15 and 16, right where we were told. You saved the world Deanna." She smiles, taking a bite.
"So did Doctor Bashir, just he'll never know it. Hey does the database have anything on him?"
"I'm sure it does. Why?" He failed at hiding jealously.
"Oh no reason. Doesn't matter I couldn't see him for four years anyway. Though with a kiss like that four years may not be that hard to wait for."
"What!?" She takes a swipe of whipped cream placing it gently on his nose and turns back to the window.
"Next time we have to do any time traveling I think I should be the one to go!" Deanna smiles to herself as she listens to him stump away.
