A/N: This is something of a prologue. Much of the story will revolve around how we got here. One thing to clarify: nearly all of my WH40k knowledge comes from Dawn of War and Wikipedia. And the final part of this prologue is inspired by the intro to the Chaos Stronghold in the Dark Crusade campaign.

Fort Ragnarok, Aroyya II

"General, how go the preparations?" asked Force Commander Adamya Vladimir of the Blood Ravens Chapter.

"Very well, sir," answered General Hideo of the 8th Cadian Division. "My Guardsmen are dug in along the western approach. Defilers and Basilisks will make getting close a very uncomfortable proposition for the enemy."

"We are dealing with Necrons, General. Deploy more turrets – and get some Obliterators while you're at it."

"Sir, the Obliterators are guarding the Chaos Gate."

"I'll talk to Lord Denerik. Perhaps you could put some Leman Russes up there?"

"Yes, sir." Hideo turned and left. Commander Vladimir hopped in his personal Rhino.

"Take me to the Chaos Gate."

"Yes, sir!" the driver responded. It was a short ride. When Vladimir got out, Chaos Lord Denerik of the Word Bearers was there to greet him.

"Lord Denerik, we could use some more of your Obliterators guarding the western approach."

"I need them here to guard the gate."

"Denerik, the enemy will not be able to get to the gate except with Flayed Ones, unless they can breach our perimeter. And besides, the moment the Necrons show up, you'll be summoning the Bloodthirster of Khorne, right?"

"Yes."

"Then what do you need Obliterators for, dammit! Put them on the western approach. They can teleport back here if they're needed."

"Very well." Denerik and Vladimir turned at the sound of approaching feet. It was Karalos, Denerik's sorcerer-lieutenant.

"My Lord, Commander, we have word that the Necrons approach from the West!"

"Summon the Bloodthirster at once! I will contact General Hideo."

Chapter-Librarian William Jonas stood beside Chaos Sorcerer Karalos in front of the Warp Gate. They began their dark incantation.

"With the thirty-seven keys of Tzeentch, we open the way for our brothers."

"With the thousand whispers of Slaanesh, we call to them."

"With the twelve plagues of Nurgle, we fell their enemies."

"With the mighty axe of Khorne, we cut open the world for them."

"And with the blessing of the Immortal Emperor, we grant them victory!"

The last line got a rousing cheer from the Guardsmen as the Chaos Space Marines poured forth from the gate.

"Yes," crooned Lord Denerik, "come forth, warriors of humanity."

"Enemies of Man, you meet your doom today!" declared General Hideo.

Commander Vladimir raised their banner of the double-headed eagle of the Imperium clutched the eight-pointed star of Chaos. He issued his challenge.

"Surrender now, or face the inconceivable wrath of Humanity Undivided!"

The Necrons continued their inexorable advance. Not that anyone expected them to stop.

"Denerik, care to give the order?" Vladimir offered.

"Gladly." Denerik stepped forth, and raised his croizus.

"Open fire, men! For Chaos and the Emperor!"

A/N: So, what do you think? Do not worry, all will be revealed.

Please review, for Chaos and the Emperor!
