What Started it all

James and Sirius sat at the Gryffindor table, their raven coloured locks intermingling as they leaned over a piece of old parchment. James whispered a few unintelligible words in Sirius' ear, before the latter nodded and scribbled on the piece. They had been like that for an hour, it was making Snape's eye twitch. Whenever those two boys concentrated on anything for more than ten minutes, there was bound to be trouble. Usually for him.

He watched the two boys suspiciously, his eyes only leaving them to politely nod at a first year who had been thanking him for helping him pass his potions exam earlier that day. He gently patted the boy on the head as the boy turned to leave, and called out to him promising to go over the exam later that evening. He his eyes widened as the two Marauders and their cohorts rose from their seats readying themselves to leave, their eyes on the small boy that just left his side not a minute prior.

Stealthy he followed the Marauders through the chilly corridors, careful to stay concealed the the castles deep shadows. "Hey, stop that!" Snape stopped, his back pressed against the wall as he listened. "Potter, give me back my test! I need it to practice." Snape's fist closed tightly around his wand handle.

"Aww the inkle firsty wants his wittle test back," Sirius pouted, his voice singsong like.

"Give it!" The boy cried again, there was a crash and Snape ran from his hiding spot to stop in front of the boy, one hand gripping him tightly on the shoulder to keep him behind his back.

James and Sirius stood in front of him, the former with a black eye. Snape glared at both of them, his breath coming out harshly from his nostrils. "Leave him alone. He has done nothing to you."

James spat at the floor beside Snape's feet, causing Snape to snap. He pushed the bespectacled boy against the stone wall, his wand firmly pressing against James' throat. "I dare you to do that again, Potter."

Sirius chuckled darkly behind him, "as if you could hurt us, Snivelus. Don't make us laugh."

That was the first time Snape had ever hexed them. True hatred boiled between James and Snape after that day, hatred that only died when they did.
