He had always thought it would be more painful than this. But, as he ran, he really couldn't feel much. His limbs were starting to get heavy, he needed to find a secure location to rest. As he ran into the tower, in hopes of escaping his executioners, he started to think back on what he had done. What had he really accomplished? He took a second to think on it…. He had achieved what he wanted. He had achieved godhood. But, like the ancient Greek gods, his vanity had been his downfall. Either way, no one else would have made it this far. He had truly changed the world. Crime rates were at a shocking 1% of what they were when he started. He supposed that crime rates would rise a bit after his death. Yes… He knows that when he is found they will kill him, who wouldn't? He remembered back to when he wanted to catch Kira, he thought of Kira as a mass murderer, he would have killed Kira then too. If only Mikami had LISTENED, he wouldn't be in this mess. He really should have taken it into his own hands, it would have been so simple to have Mikami check the Death Note, just a simple sentence is all Light had to do. He had gotten soft, gotten weak. He never should have trusted that mindless follower.
Light supposed there was nothing he could do now. His presence as Kira would not be lost on the world anyway, as he had contingency plans. Of course he thought he might die eventually, so he wrote down two criminal names for every year, criminals with life sentences that wouldn't be dying anytime soon. He also hid 20 pieces of the Death Note, and had picked out a young successor. He had written down the girl's enemy's name, with a message containing all the relevant information. This was set for 3 years from now. So crime rates would likely come back to almost their previous state until she started.
He heard the yelling of the task force, and closed his eyes. He had accomplished what he wanted. The world had been changed for the better. He could rest in peace. The sounds were right outside the building now. Right as they knock the door, Light hears one last, bone chilling sound.
The maniacal laugh emanating from all around him. At that moment his heart stopped. Light Yagami was no more. His light had gone out.
