"You did it Carter."
"It wasn't me."
Jack sat in his office playing with his yo-yo. He was thinking about Carter and what she had just been through. Not able to stay away any longer, and needing to know for himself that she was okay, he headed to the infirmary. Walking into the room Jack immediately noticed the farthest bed with the curtain drawn for privacy. Slowly walking towards the bed, making sure not to gain too much attention from the nurses, he crossed the room. Stopping at the curtain opening to glance in he saw Carter curled up sleeping peacefully. No longer able to help himself he slipped inside and finding the chair by the bed sat down and just continued to watch her sleep. Jack seeing the cover rise and fall with each breath she took began to feel a little more at ease, and started to relax into the chair dozing slightly. Waking, not sure how long he'd been in there, he decided he'd better get back to work, before he did attract anyone's un-wanted attention. Slowly standing and walking back to the curtain opening he thought he heard a small voice.
"Sir."
Freezing in place not sure if he actually heard her he waited a beat to see if she would speak again. When she didn't he grabbed the curtain opening to exit, when she spoke again.
"Sir, c..could you stay? I'm still a little uncomfortable being alone. Sir, doyouthinkyoucouldholdme just, just for a minute?"
Sam noticing his reluctance, quickly began to backpedal.
"Oh of course not sir, I …. I don't know what I'm saying ….. just chalk it up to me being out of my mind sir, I'm sorry."
Sam began to pull the cover back up under her chin and turn away from him when she felt a slight pressure on the left side of her bed. She stopped fidgeting with the cover and sought out his eyes.
Jack doing his best not to disturb any of the medical paraphernalia hooked up to her, slowly sat down on the bed. Not quite sure what to do next he reached out his arms to her.
"Com' mer."
Not quite braced for the sudden on-slaught of Carter throwing herself into his arms, Jack had to re-balance himself to keep from falling forward and crushing her to the bed.
Holding her tightly Jack said the only thing that popped into his head.
"It's okay Sam….you're going to be alright. I'm right here for you."
Hearing her given name fall from his lips, she increased her hold on him ten-fold. No longer able to hold the tears at bay, she began to sob into his black t-shirt.
"I'm so scared …. I can't tell where I start and she ends …. I don't know what to do …. or if there is anything I can do."
"It's okay Sam … We'll get you through this you just have to believe that."
After holding her for what felt like was an eternity, but in reality was only a couple of minutes, Jack reluctantly started to extricate himself from her. As Sam was unwinding her hands from the back of his t-shirt and relaxing back into the bed he heard her softly.
"Thanks … Jack."
Knowing he needed to get out of there before he lost it in front of her, he quickly rose from the bed and headed for the curtain opening. Sam was starting to doze off again when she heard him.
"Anytime Sam, …… anything for you."
Not quite sure he had actually spoken, or if she was wishful thinking, Sam turned back to the curtain opening just in time to see a glimpse of grey hair. With a refreshed feeling of hope she drifted off to sleep with a faint smile of her face.
