Hetalia isn't mine.

The water stilled and then rippled outwards, fragmenting the moon's reflection. The warm night air hummed with the ballad of crickets and cicadas, a melody that rose and fell alongside the gentle waves that lapped at the wooden boat's sides. The sky was spread with millions of lights, stars that stood proud against the backdrop of black and dark blue while the moon rose higher into the sky, a celestial beauty far from earth's hemisphere and where the man stood, ankle deep in the current.

The moon's glow turned his blond hair into a halo of white and gold, ringing it in starlight where it fell to the base of his neck and tickled his chin. The night was thrumming with possibilities, and he realized that it was all his for the taking.

Wading into deeper water, he stopped about mid-thigh and looked back up into the sky, wondering what all the lights thought of the world. They must be tired of watching us make the same mistakes…but maybe they can enjoy watching the happiness we create.

"Matthew."

Turning, he saw the albino waiting on the shoreline, back from gathering firewood. Already, there was a small spark running along the bark, fragile and unpretentious. It too hung with possibilities of something greater.

"Back already? I thought it would take you longer."

"I'm Prussia! I was born finding tinder and making fires!"

"Difficult delivery."

"Oh, shush."

Chucking, he turned back to gaze out over the midnight-tainted water, serene and alluring. Gesturing, he waved for Prussia to come join him out in the lake.

A few muffled splashed were heard before he felt a head rest on his shoulder, a huff escaping the lips that brushed across his cheek, chaste and loving. "Why do you love them so much?"

"Hmmm?" not comprehending he reached for the hands wrapped around his middle, linking their fingers.

"Why do you love the sky so much?"

"That's a very personal question."

"I'm sorry; I didn't mean to overstep any boundaries." The apology was sincere, and he sighed softly before handing his answer over to the man he loved.

"It's…hard to describe. You'd probably understand better than most, though." Prussia waited patiently for him to continue, an expectant look on his features.

"Being the Great White North, you get used to the loneliness of being alone, the ringing silence and the moments when the Sun never sets. You realize you aren't the most important thing on this Earth, which I find the rest of the world to forget more often than not."

"The stars have always been there for me. In the darkest dark, in the brightest day, in the crushing weight of being alone for years on end, they have always watched my steps and have pointed me north when I've turned down the wrong path. They've been there, although distant, they've been there nevertheless."

Gilbert searched his face, eyes flicking over his expression and watching him carefully before speaking. "I won't leave you. Not anymore, just like those damn stars of yours. I'll be there, okay?"

Smiling, he tilted his head and caught Prussia in a kiss.

"Okay."
