Prologue – Drowning
"All change is not growth,
As all movement is not forward."
-Ellen Glasgow
Pain surged through me as another wave slammed hard against my body. It felt like someone was jerking me around by the back of my jacket, not caring whether I survived or not. It was a wonder that I was even conscious. Relief poured into my mind when the feeling of cold water disappeared; maybe I got lucky and my entire body went numb. That was when an indescribable pain struck. I threw my head back, screaming at the top of my lungs in agony.
It was like being forced through a tube that was too small for my body to fit. Please, please! Just end it! I thought to myself and the pain seemed to only increase. When I thought I couldn't take it anymore, the end came. The pain slowly melted away. It was too blurry for me to see, so my eyelids closed, and I allowed my body to relax.
Everything was starting to grow dark. The thing I saw was a bright light. The feeling of floating upwards…cool air surrounding me…
