Who you'd be today:
Sitting alone in his living room with a glass of wine surrounded by several dozen photographs, George Huang closed his eyes briefly against the stab of pain that he felt whenever he thought about his wife, Shannon and daughter, Melanie, and the horrbile car accident that claimed them both. Today was five years since that tragedy. He put his hand over his heart and took a shuddering breath. When he opened his eyes again, he took a sip of his wine and turned his attention to the pictures spread out of in front of him on the floor.
There was the one he had taken when he found out he was going to be a daddy. His wife looked so pretty that day. They had celebrated by making love, after going out to a big, expensive restaurant. He had been so happy.
And the one after Shannon had given birth and he was holding Melanie for the first time.He had felt so protective, proud and scared at the same time. He traced his fingers over the photo. Picture by picture he picked them up and looked at them. He reached for the last one, it was the one that always broke him down into tears. The day of the accident, Shannon had told him that she was pregnant again. their daughter had been so excited, she had made a sign for the baby and had insisted that he take a picture for the future. He had.
George stopped there for a minute. He remembered the accident. He was supposed to go to Shannon's parents with them, They were going to tell them together. At the last minute, he got a page from Cragen. There had been a case and he was urgently needed. Shannon had told him to go, that they would meet him there. He had given them both kisses and grabbed his stuff and left, not knowing that it would be the last time he would do so.
The call had come in after he had been there at the precinct for a couple hours. Cragen had tried to break it to him easy- Elliot, Fin, Munch and Olivia had all been there when he was told- They had all tried to catch him when he fell, no, when he passed out from the shock. When he had finally come around, he had to identify their bodies. That was the first and only time any of them had ever seen him cry.
George Shifted his body so that he was leaning against his couch. He picked up the picture and looked at it again. Just then a song came over the radio and he stopped what he was doing to listen.
Sunny
days seem to hurt the most
Wear the pain like a heavy coat
I
feel you everywhere I go
I see your smile, I see your face
I
hear your laugh' in the rain
I still can't believe you're
gone
(Chorus)
It ain't fair you died too young
Like a
story that had just begun
But death tore the pages all away
God
knows how I miss you
All the hell that I've been through
Just
knowing, no one could take your place
Sometimes I wonder, who
you'd be today
Would you see the world
Would you chase your
dreams
Settle down with a family
I wonder what would you name
your babies
Somedays the sky's so blue
I feel like I can talk
to you
And I know it might sound crazy
(Chorus)
It ain't
fair you died too young
Like a story that had just begun
But
death tore the pages all away
God knows how I miss you
All the
hell that I've been through
Just knowing, no one could take your
place
Sometimes I wonder, who you'd be today
Today, Today,
Today...
Today, Today, Today...
Sunny days seem to hurt the
most
I wear the pain like a heavy coat
The only thing that
gives me hope
Is I know, I'll see you again someday
Someday, Someday...
After the song was over, George gave himself over to the crying for a little while. When he was finished, He was exhausted. He put everything away and drained the rest of his wine and blew a kiss towards heaven. He cleaned up and got ready for bed. He had to be at the precinct the next morning to work on a case, and he was going to be fine.
