Based off of All Time Low's song Remembering Sunday
I do not own the song or whatever
She drifted through the park mindlessly, her feet taking her where she'd been a thousand times before. Lost in her thoughts, she was surprised when she stumbled upon their bench. Where they met. Where they dated. Where they made memories. She ran her hand over the rough, weathered wood, covered in names and words. She knew them all by heart and so did he. She exhaled before pulling the knife from her purse and carving deep into the wood.
She ran to her car, tears threatening to leak out of her eyes. Trembling, she rested her head on the steering wheel and the weight of her decision finally sank in. Gathering strength, she drove home. She calmly walked to her small room and pulled the rope out from under her bed. Outside, she tied the rope to the highest branch of her favorite tree, a large maple that contained all of her secrets. She had climbed to the tips of this tree as a child. Climbing once again as she secured the rope. Swinging down, she closed her eyes to embrace the wind and sun. On a new branch, she tied the rope around her neck, and jumped.
He toyed with the miniscule box in his coat pocket as he approached their bench, an hour later. When he saw the bench, he knew something was different. There were two new carvings. He kneeled as he read the carvings and began to weep.
The first one read "Keeping an eye on the world,
From so many thousands of feet off the ground, I'm over you now
I'm at home in the clouds, and towering over your head."
He couldn't control the tears that flooded their bench. The second read "I Love You." Shaking, he got to his feet. He managed to run to his car and drive the route he knew so well.
He slammed on the brakes as he saw her tree. And her. His strong jaw trembling, he climbed her tree and loosened the knot around her neck. He cradled her body as he carefully left her tree. Placing her empty body on the grass, he took the ring box out of his pocket. Opening it, he whispered a quick "Will you marry me?" with tears streaming down his face. Not needing, or getting, an answer, he placed the ring on her finger.
Tears threatening him once again, he knelt on the fresh dirt and set down the flowers he brought. Staring off at the gloomy clouds in the distance, he whispered "I Love You." He skimmed the gravestone's inscription, one more time, before turning and walking away to start the rest of his life.
The words were now etched into his mind.
"Keeping an eye on the world,
From so many thousands of feet off the ground, I'm over you now
I'm at home in the clouds, and towering over your head."
He wanted to forget that day, but he knew that he'd always be Remembering Sunday.
