How to Make A Monster

A Kingdom Hearts fanfiction by Apathy Personified

Introduction

Save Me

It stopped moving.

The fiend's breaths came out harsh through its sharp teeth. It opened it's jowls wide and shrieked gutturally in the back of its throat but continued to otherwise remain in the torpid state.

Riku's gloves and skin were slick with his own blood and the beast's, but he gripped Way to Dawn surely and advanced at an unassuming pace; his blade dragged the ground as he moved, the sword's tip tracing his path in a wavering line in the dirt. His heart beat erratically against his battered rib cage. The edges of his vision blurred a gossamer white.

The beast and the keyblade wielder locked eyes when they were no more than a breath away from each other: one of the pair was accepting, the other sharp with resolve and filled regret.

Shadow—a chill that settled deep in the bones—and a tendril of voice brushed against the forefront of Riku's mind. It could have been much more than a bout of incomprehensible words, but the meaning was crystal clear.

Riku looked to the ground, closing his eyes, before he lifted his keyblade and stabbed it between the creature's wet eyes. There was a sickening squelch when the sharp metal pressed into the soft part of the beast's diseased brain tissue and the beast squealed an octave louder the further its mouth opened. Spurts of rotten, brown blood oozed from the fatal wound; wet strings of spittle broke from its mouth and wrapped around Riku, staining his clothing, corroding where it met soft flesh.

Momentarily, he was blinded by agony. For Light's sake, it hurt. Faintly he realized this . . . mutation would be in much more pain.

He bit his lip and ignored the pain. Still, he shoved the blade in deeper and flicked his wrist sharply in an attempt to end it quicker.

Squelch. He squeezed his eyes tightly closed at the mess running down his arm. A bit more blood and only Darkness knows what.

When the beast quieted, closing his mouth and laying its entire body heavily on the ground, Riku dismissed his keyblade and draped himself off its mussel, tears leaking into fetid fur. Ragged breaths came through the beast's nose, mussing Riku's hair.

Heh. Thanks . . . Riku.

Riku fell to his hands and knees when the beast sagged and began to evaporate, it's life-light swirling around the one who saved it. The multi-colored particles brushed against Riku.

"Ngh." Riku gripped his heart, a silent sob building in his chest.

Hmm . . . I wish I could tell where this idea came from, but it would give the story away. :)
