Harry/Hermione friendship fic but if you want, can turn out to be much much more. One-shot

"I hope that I made a wise decision, leaving you two alone." McGonagall said, giving them a rather significant look that made both teens blush bright red.

The three of them were currently situated in the empty Transfiguration classroom which Hermione (after MUCH pleading) had "borrowed" for the night to help Harry practice the Summoning Charm

Of course Ron wasn't there, considering he was currently in the common room, sulking about and telling people about how Harry was "a stinking cheater" and how he was sick and tired of being in the shadow of the Boy-Who-Lived.

Ron was an idiot, to say the least.

After vehement protests at what McGonagall had implied they wanted to do, she closed the door with a small smirk neither teen had ever seen from the Deputy Headmistress

"What do you plan on doing to the dragon (Hermione's voice shook , with anger or fear, she didn't know) that you need to know how to execute the summoning charm?"

Harry dearly wanted to say "Oh, just planning on summoning my Firebolt and attempting to outfly a dragon and pray to God for strength and Merlin for mercy that I survive".

But he didn't, Hermione wasn't the "Brightest Witch of Her Age" for nothing and he really didn't want to be in the receiving end of her trigger-happy wand. So, after much deliberation (which wasn't really much, since he did NOT want to make her more impatient) he just went with (hoping he sounded confident, sheepish, and charming at the same time)

"Oh. I-er, I was, uh, kind of thinking of, um, you know, summoning my-er broom and, uh, outflying the, um, dragon"

Smooth, Potter. Very smooth.

Hermione currently looked as if someone had hit her over the head with a frying pan. "Excuse me? Would you mind saying that again?"

"I'd rather not, thanks" he replied, a sheepish grin on his face.

"You- outfly? But- Wouldn't it- You are- oh Harry." At first, she looked confused, then surprised, then a bit angry, before she looked exasperated, as if she gave up on figuring him out years ago. Harry silently thought he should be given an award.

"Right" she said, delving into lecture mode "Let's start."

It was two exhausted, but very pleased teens that walked out of the classroom a couple of hours later.

"Thanks, Hermione. For everything" Harry said, smiling lightly at Hermione

"You're very welcome, Mr. Potter, and no are my best friend, after all."

"No, really. Thank you" Harry told Hermione, tone more serious "You're the only one who believed me when I said I didn't put my name in the goblet. And you're the only person who's helping me outfly a freaking dragon"

"You're the best friend I've ever had, and I'm grateful, though I haven't really appreciated you before, so, thank you." "Literally, for EVERYTHING"

Hermione was taken aback. She always thought Ron was his best mate. Bloody good best mate he is, the way he's acting. She thought ruefully though she was touched that Harry was telling her all this.

"Thanks, Harry" she told him sincerely "For everything, too"

And did something she had never done, and kissed him on the cheek, before going up the stairs, missing the look of befuddlement on Harry's face, a hand on his cheek.

A/N: The line, God for strength and Merlin for mercy was taken from Sirius Black and the Seven Gryffindors by Kitz the Kitsune; a rather amusing and adorable fic, if I do say so myself

This line "And did something she had never done, and kissed him on the cheek" is taken from the Goblet of Ffrom of the Harry Potter Series
