I'll Take a Chance on Leaving
Henry can't find his wife anywhere. When he woke up, she wasn't there, and she still hasn't shown up. He's tried to find her—looking everywhere, trying everything, even yelling "Ollie, Ollie, oxen free" like they were just playing hide-and-seek.
He gives up hope of finding her, then sees the note on the door.
Dear Henry, it says.
I promised I'd never do this; it's too much like my mom. And, for some reason, I'm doing it anyway. I'm leaving, and I'm sorry. I'll be back someday. Maybe.
Love,
Natalie.
Henry doesn't know what to think. All these years Natalie had promised herself that she would never just pick up and leave like her mom, and now she has.
He picks up the phone, calls the one person who'll understand.
"Hello?" Dan says on the other end.
"She's gone." Henry doesn't have to say anything else—he knows his father-in-law will know what he's talking about.
Dan doesn't know what to say. No one said anything to him after Diana left, so what is he supposed to say to Henry now that Natalie's left? Finally, he decides on, "I'm sorry."
