Memories For Granted

They were a thing most people took for granted, assumed they'd still be there the next time they woke up, the next time they saw those faces.

He'd taken then for granted too, before he was suddenly living a life without them. A life where everything seemed foreign, where things lurked out of sight, just beyond what he could make out and understand…and remember.

He had to reknow his parents through photos. He had to learn about his entire life through photos and the words of other people. That made it seem so superficial, as though he was reading a book or watching a movie, trying to fill in all those empty gaps he had floating about.

But he could make new memories. Memories not tied down by things that no longer existed in his past…unless he lost them again.

But he couldn't take them for granted either way, having already lost them once.
