Cameron stood on the edge of the roof. She thought about just letting everything go – to jump and to not care about what would happen next. What would happen to the people who still cared about her? Usually, Cameron was the one to care for others regardless of whether she knew them for years or even for just a few minutes.
The blonde thought about Remy. Thirteen. That was what others called her. The ones who didn't know her that well. The ones who just saw Thirteen – the mysterious and very good-looking brunette doctor – and not Remy.
The last time Cameron had been on this roof, it was Remy who stopped her from doing something stupid. But this time, she wasn't there. She wouldn't help her. She couldn't. The tears in Cameron's eyes flowed and flowed. Huntington's. She knew that it was Remy's death sentence. But she had years left. Her life wasn't over yet.
They were happy – the two of them. Ever since they kissed on that rainy day on the roof, they had spent days (and nights) together, not letting each other go, living and enjoying every minute they had together.
Day after day, the thought of Remy's impending death hardly ever crossed their minds. But no one thought that, one day, that aforementioned brunette would appear in the ER: not to help Cameron but instead being helped and carried in by two other doctors.
"Car crash. Female. Mid-twenties. Unconscious."
That was what they had said. Cameron remembered every single word. She then had realized that it was Remy they were talking about. She just stood there, unable to move, and even stopped breathing for a few seconds. Focus. Focus. She had said to herself over and over again.
They had finally managed to stabilize the young woman. Remy had been unconscious for hours, and Cameron was just there. She sat next to her bed, holding Remy's hand the entire time. When Remy's eyes slowly opened, Cameron sat with her on the bed carefully. Several times, she had gently kissed her. But Remy had still been too weak to speak.
Cameron wrapped her arms around her own body, shivering. But she didn't care whether or not it was freezing at the roof. She stared at the lights of the other buildings around the hospital. She couldn't stop herself from crying.
I love you. Remy had said that before she had closed her eyes again. Forever.
Cameron was ready to jump, not wanting to think about Remy's death but only repeating her last words in her mind. Over and over again… We had years left. But it was strange how one typical everyday tragedy in the form of a car crash had ruined both their lives.
She wanted to jump.
But she couldn't. Remy wouldn't let her do that, having once said that Cameron should live her life for both of them. A smile appeared on Cameron's face by the thought of Remy. She closed her eyes, replaying their happiest moments together – back when they had finally found out that they were in love with each other and when Cameron had spent the weekends at Remy's place with the brunette desperately trying to make her stay until Monday mornings.
Cameron slowly turned around, now facing the door to the hospital.
I have to live my life. For her. With that thought, she walked back inside.
