Ben Cheney was my first real boyfriend. He was the first guy I ever truly loved. He was really thoughtful. One day, the summer after graduation, he suggested we take a trip to the beach. I remember absolutely everything about that day. It was overcast, as it always is here on the Olympic Peninsula. It had rained recently, so the pebbled beach of La Push was slightly slippery. He was wearing a short sleeved, dark green shirt and he brought his Batman comic. I remember everything.

It was a little after twilight when they showed up. We probably should have gone home earlier, but it wasn't to cold yet. Only cold enough that it gave me the excuse to ask him to wrap his arms around me. We were sitting down, so we were about the same height. We kissed, softly, our lips shaping themselves around themselves around each other, then reshaping. I fleetingly thought about how I had fallen for a much better guy then Harley Quinn had, we had a much better relationship. Ben had been talking about the Joker lately.

We were interrupted by the far off howls of wolves. It was too early for them to be out We parted, and both stood up. "We should probably be heading home." I said, always the responsible one. "What, afraid a wolf will come and bit off your left foot?" I laughed. It was the last time Ben would make me laugh. As we were walking to the car, I was about to ask why my left foot. I never got the chance.

He swooped in, gracefully and quickly. His features reminded me of the Cullens. Beautiful, pale, except his eyes were bright crimson and had a wild look to them, as opposed to the Cullens' ever-collected manner. I could think about this for only a fraction of a second, he was moving too fast. A millisecond later, I saw something even more frightening. Wolves. Nine or ten of them, in a variety of hues. But they were all as big as a horse, and had extra sharp looking teeth.

Of course, Ben and I tried to run, not that it did us much good. We were mainly trying to get away from the wolves. The man seemed dangerous as well, but not as threatening for the moment. Ben was faster than I was, but neither of us got very far. The man came towards us, so fast it was hard to see him. The wolves ran towards him, snarling. As if this wasn't terrifying enough, I saw the most horrifying thing of my life. The unnatural man went for Ben. I would have missed it if I blinked, which was impossible. My eyes were wide with shock. He opened his mouth. And the man bit Ben's neck.

Naturally, I screamed. I tried my very hardest to keep running, to keep from shutting down. I heard Ben scream too. Very briefly, before it cut off with a gurgle. I wasn't looking any more. I just ran for the car, trying not to think about what had just happened. I looked back, fleetingly, and I watched as the giant wolves pulled the vampiric man to pieces. Through the gargantuan mass of fur, I noticed that the man didn't bleed, that he was just as pale on the inside. How odd. Just as I was about to turn my head back around, I saw one of the larger of the already very large wolves, a reddish brown one, look up to stare directly at me. This pushed me to run even faster. I was sure that as soon as they were finished with the odd man, they would come for me.

I reached the car, threw the door open, and put it into drive. I pushed down the pedal, far to fast than was good for my old car. I didn't stop until I was back home. Nobody was home. The twins were out at a friend's, and Mom and Dad were shopping in Port Angeles.

I don't even make it inside. I just stay in the car, and cry, slumped over the wheel.
