ButterflyKisses
"Hey, Sora! Look at that one!"
The seven-year-old whipped his head in the direction where he heard the voice. He saw his blonde friend raising a finger up to the sky as she pointed to what they had been trying to catch all day—a butterfly.
He crouched down, as if he were a predator, his eyes set on his prey. "I'll get it…!" He leapt into the air, his arms and legs flailing rather awkwardly, trying to catch the butterfly. Instead, he landed flat on his face.
Some predator he was. He just embarrassed himself in front of Namine!
She giggled as she ran over to him. "Are you okay?"
The young brunette gave her a cheesy grin. "Sorry you had to see that, Nami! But don't worry—I'll catch one for you soon!"
The two of them had been trying—to no avail—to catch a butterfly all morning after Namine had seen one in a book she had been reading. She had been pretty obsessed with them for awhile; she drew them all over her sketchbook, painted them on her walls, and even tried to be one herself when she wrapped herself in blankets near the paopu tree. After that, Sora decided that it was about time for her to have one.
Namine yelled again. "Sora—there!"
The fragile girl of seven started running towards the butterfly, her hopes and dreams skyrocketing. It landed on a branch of the paopu tree—a place too high for Namine to reach.
She huffed, blowing the hair that strayed in front of her eyes and stomped her foot. When Sora had finally caught up to her, he noticed her sudden change of mood. "What's wrong?"
"I was this close to getting the butterfly, Sora!" She exclaimed, throwing her arms up for emphasis. "Did you see it?" She pointed at the butterfly, still perched on the limb as if it were mocking at them.
"I'll get it for you, Nami!" he said, already climbing it. "I'll be SURE to get it this time…!"
She looked up after him, a worried look painted on her face. "Are you sure? It's reeeally high…"
He turned his head to her, giving his signature grin. "Don't worry!" He gave her a thumbs-up sign. "I'll do anything for you, Namine!"
She brightened up, a smile spreading over her face.
Sora returned to the task before him, his eyebrows furrowed in concentration as he climbed higher up the tree. He even had his tongue stuck out, a sight far too adorable for Namine to take.
"Almost there—!" he said, his arm outstretched with his finger forming into a perch for the butterfly. He looked like he was reaching for the hand of God.
But the butterfly wasn't God, and it flew daintily away as Sora lunged for it. He let out a yell as he fell to the ground, almost breaking his arm. Namine ran over to him, crazed as ever.
"Sora! Are you okay!? I knew I should've stopped you when you climbed the tree…This is all my fault!" She began to cry, filling the atmosphere with gloom and despair.
And Sora didn't like that feeling.
He sat up, trying to cheer her up. "It's okay, Nami—!" But the girl only wailed louder. The young boy hung his head in defeat, the same time when the prized butterfly landed in his hands.
"Look, Namine!" he said, hoping to console her. "A butterfly!"
The girl opened one eye, and after seeing what she wanted the most at that moment, the other eye shot open. She clasped her hands in delight as Sora put the butterfly in her hands.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" She gushed and planted a kiss on his cheek. She blushed bright red, skipping back to her house happily.
Sora stood there stunned. As soon as he came back to his senses, he started running after her, shouting her name. "Need another butterfly?"
