Disclaimer: I do not own either Grey's Anatomy or the film, The Proposal. I am simply borrowing the characters and putting them in my own world.

Meredith Grey has always been a tough as nails surgeon. She was an independent woman, who gave no fucks about anyone who came her way. Many feared her in Seattle Grace Hospital. Every intern scurried out of her way, every attending is afraid of making small talk, and every nurse hesitates to page her 911. She is the head of neurosurgery, not because she scared the hospital's chief, but, she was actually good at the job — great, actually. But now, she's stuck with a cohead of neurosurgery named Derek Shepherd. The dark hair, blue eyed man who seemed to hate her as much as she hated him.

Derek Shepherd acquired a new job at Seattle Grace, offered by his good mentor, Richard Webber. He dropped his private practice in New York and moved to the rainy city of Seattle. 6 months ago, he remembered walking into the chief's office and making eye contact with a petite, blonde woman, Meredith Grey. The Meredith Grey, the woman who has been apparently compared to Medusa around the hospital. Derek flashed her his dreamiest smile, which she seemed to somewhat take sincerely.

"Derek Shepherd," he introduced himself, holding his hand out to shake her hand.

Meredith pursed her lips and turned back to Richard Webber.

"I just don't understand why you had to have another head of neuro. Isn't one enough?" Meredith said sarcastically.

"Meredi—" Richard didn't even get a chance to speak before Meredith continued. Derek awkwardly stayed in the back, amused.

"You men are always threatened by a powerful woman, what's new." Meredith turned her back to Richard, and passed by Derek. She made eye contact with him, and for a split second her thoughts were gone, before Derek could introduce himself again, she walked out of the door.

"She's quite something, huh." Derek chuckled.

Richard sighed and nodded, "Yeah she is. Good luck."

"I have a feeling I'm gonna need it."

6 months later, Meredith and Derek were known as the McEnemies, coined by none other than Cristina Yang, one of the few people Meredith considers as a friend. Throughout those 6 months, the two consistently argued and sarcastically complimented each other. It almost seemed as if they were one of those married couple, who were married for a long time. In those 6 months, they had been the topic of gossip. Many rumors circulated the two, and the current one is that everyone suspects that the two were somehow involved in the past, and it is all the bottled up feelings finally emerging.

"I don't understand why people think I would even be in a relationship with you, let alone be near you," Meredith expressed, while checking her charts, knowing that Derek was right next to her. In the last 6 months, Meredith has developed a habit of knowing whenever Derek was close or near her. It was either because she hated him or—

"I mean what can I say, Mer, I'm a catch." Derek's voice interrupted Meredith's thoughts, fortunately. Meredith didn't even have to look up to know that he was smiling his annoyingly handsome smile.

"Hey Derek?" Meredith said sweetly, as she continued to go over her chart. She could feel Derek moving near her.

"Yes?" Derek said, in an equally sweet tone. Meredith looked up and glared at his McDreamy face.

"Call me Mer one more time, and you'll be six feet under." Before Derek could add a witty comment, she was off to her patients. That was the thing about Meredith, no matter how cold and distant she seemed to her peers, she was the complete opposite when it came to her patients.

Before Meredith's shift ended, she got an urgent page from Richard Webber. As she got closer to his office, the last person she wanted to see had just left Webber's office.

"What are you doing here?" Meredith asked, her eyebrows raised.

"I was just telling Richard about the leave I'm taking for a month." Derek said. He swore he saw Meredith's eyes glisten.

"You're leaving?" Meredith said, concern resonating in her tone.

"Don't get too excited, Mer...edith, just for a month. A family vacation in New York." Derek explained, Meredith rolled her eyes and pushed passed through him. There was the Meredith he knew.

Meredith entered Richard's office. Richard looked ip from his paperworks and motioned for Meredith to sit. Meredith had no clue what this meeting was about, but she obliged and sat down.

"Meredith, now, you have been a tremendous addition to this hospital. You're one of the finest neurogeons in this country," Richard began. Meredith could sense that there was a "but" that followed that statement. Richard continued, "but," There it was! Meredith thought. "you have been called in to be deported."

"Deported?" Meredith said in disbelief.

"Something with your paperworks. You have a week to pack your belongings and move back to Italy. Once you have everything back, you can rightly claim back your position. As of right now however, you have to go back home." Richard explained.

"This is ridiculous! It's not like I'm an illegal citizen!" Meredith expressed. She got up from her chair, and paced.

"I know, but, it should take a couple of months tops for you to fix everything. If there was anything I could do, I would."

Derek almost reached the ground floor when he realized that he forgot his keys in Richard's office. He reached for the elevator button that would take him to Richard's office. Derek walked towards Richard's office and without thinking, opened the door without knocking. Meredith and Richard's heads both snapped up to look at him.

"I...uh...I forgot my keys," Derek said. He quickly walked towards Richard's desk and retrieved his car keys.

"Now Meredith," Richard said.

Meredith looked at Derek and squinted her eyes. A lightbulb lit up in her mind, even though she had to admit, that her plan was completely ridiculous. Meredith walked closer to Derek and laced her arm around his. Derek was confused as to what he just walked into, Richard was equally confused. Meredith put on her best smile.

"We're engaged. Derek and I," Meredith met Derek's blue eyes, puzzled with confusion, "are getting married." Meredith gulped.

Richard both looked at Derek and Meredith. Derek looked as if he had just seen a ghost. Meredith leaned her head against Derek's arm. Richard then chuckled.

"Well I'll be damned. I knew something was going on between you two. I knew the whole hate thing was just an act," Richard winked at both of them, "look, if you two were worried about telling me abour your relationship, you have my blessing."

Richard stood up and congratulated Meredith and Derek. Meredith kept smiling, but, Derek stood still, trying to comprehend what just happened.

"Meredith, once this becomes official, we can put this whole thing behind us. I'll keep in touch with the U.S. embassy..." Richard winked, again, "congratulations, you two..."

"Mhm...we are getting.." Meredith nudged Derek.

"We are..." Derek continued, "getting married."

Meredith awkwardly kissed Derek's cheeks and the two walked out of the office door. Before Derek could bolt, Meredith pulled him inside an on call room.

"Meredith, what the hell just happened?" Derek asked.

"Derek, I had to do what I had to do. Look, we just have to pretend we're getting married this week okay? Once my papers get fixed, then we'll get a divorce. See, easy as that." Meredith rambled.

"Married? This week? Meredith, have you noticed that we hate each other, and I have to go home next week, AND THE FACT THAT THIS IS COMPLETELY ILLEGAL?!" Derek whisper yelled in frustration. Meredith has never seen Derek frantic.

"I'm sorry. I promise you'll get something out of this. name it, I'll give it to you." Meredith said, suddenly regretting her choice of words. Derek suddenly calmed down, in his mind, two can play at this game.

"Fine. After this, you will declare to the whole hospital that you promoted me to be the head, head of neurosurgery." Derek smirked.

"No way. Never gonna-" Meredith started.

"Fine. Have fun getting deported."

Meredith sighed heavily and crossed her arms. "Fine."

"That's not it." Derek said, having fun seeinf Meredith fluster.

"Ugh, Derek, what else?" Meredith asked.

"You have to ask me to marry you."

"Propose to you? Me?"

"Yes." Derek said amused. Meredith rolled her eyes and fixed her white coat. Meredith slowly went down on one knee and looked at Derek in the eyes. With a sarcastic smile, meredith said the four magical words.

"Derek, will you marry me?" She said annoyed.

"No."

"No?"

"I need more feelings Mer," Derek could see Meredith's anger seething through her eyes, "Oh yeah, and you get to let me call you Mer, otherwise the deal's off."

Meredith cleared her throat and tried again. Sweetly, she fluttered her eyes, "Derek, will you please, with a cherry on top, marry me?"

Derek chuckled, "Good enough. Okay."

Meredith reached her arm up to Derek for help to get up, but before she could say anything, Derek left the tiny on call room. Meredith stood up and huffed a breath. She could hear Derek's chuckle echoing the whole floor.

Let the games begin! Hopefully you guys enjoyed that, I am very excited to actually get to write the two to pretend to be married and to see what happens. This is heavily inspired by the movie, "The Proposal" with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, but with my own twist.

If you have not seen the film, feel free to watch the trailer so you can get a sense of where this story is going! I hope you guys enjoyed this first chapter!

The timeline of this story does not follow the timeline of Grey's, so some characters who are dead or left on the show, may be alive in this fic! Let me know if I should continue!
