The Bejeweled Blade Emerald Crossings

Chapter One

The Bejeweled Blade

Thud!" A fist collided with his jaw, but he had no time to think about his throbbing,

bleeding jaw, as he had to duck another punch that was being thrown towards his head.

Missing its target, the puncher's knuckles rammed into another man's face, one, which

has tried to give him a round from behind, as well.

He ran from the brawl, sheltering from the flying furniture… and bodies, behind the thick

wooden tavern tables

It had been an ordinary Saturday night for Artemis Owens. He had spent most of his day

out with the cattle in the fields only to come home to his parents with a ravenous appetite

and an almost slumbering herd. After a light supper he had wandered down to the town's

small tavern and seated himself at a large table with the rest of his close friends. Stallwart

Herculean the well-built blacksmith's apprentice, Milo Harper the Baker's son, Farren

Cedar the young apprentice to the Wizard and the son of the tavern owner, and the last,

but certainly not least, his closest

and dearest friend Daemon Rosenthal was not only his closet friend but also his greatest

confidant. He was also the Wizards apprentice. Daemon knew everything single little

thing about Artemis Owens. He knew about the time Artemis had gotten his head stuck in

a cooking pot. He knew of every single girl that he had ever liked, including one of the

bar maidens at that very tavern, Harmony James, he even knew about Artemis' secret

hiding place, in a grove of yew trees just on the edge of the ebony forest. The two were

inseparable, best friends, they had been since birth. Both having been born minutes

apart. Instead of screaming after they were laid on their woolen blankets, they rested

peacefully in the same cot.

Artemis and Daemon had since grown to be young men. Now they were actually

attracting girls. Both were handsome

"When are you ever going to ask that girl out?" Jeered Daemon, cheerfully.

"I don't know if I should, I mean, she probably likes me almost as she likes the cows in

the fields...!" Whispered Artemis with distress.

"Maybe she loves 'cows'?" Said Daemon, trying to be helpful.

"Maybe she loves cows! Come on, you can't be serious! What'll I do if she doesn't like

me?" Said Artemis banging his head on the table with annoyance.

"You'll get over it man. Now, have some courage and go and ask her if she wants to join

us after she has finished her work?" Cried out Daemon, rolling his eyes.

"Fine I will… I think…"

"YES… You will! Now go!" Said Daemon as he pushed Artemis off his chair so that he

stood next to the table.

"GO!" He said with a shove that sent Artemis flying over to the bar.

"No fighting Now you two!" Said the Bar owner, Thomas Cedar, Farren's father, jesting

at their pushing and shoving of Artemis.
