Treason

Seated in the Throne Room, I look over the marble floor. The reflection of the Chandelier plays in the tiles below. On my right is seated my brother Marcus, to my left my brother Caius, posted at the door are my trusted Guards Santiago and Afton. To the left of the hall are the Twins Jane and Alec accompanied by Renata, Chelsea, Corin and Heidi. To the right is my lovely wife Sulpicia joined by Athenodora.

The reason for our gathering is the execution of a newborn who has been threatening to reveal our secret to the world. It is always a very tense occasion, yet very fulfilling. There is that something about ending the miserable life of a traitor, which brings about both a sense of satisfaction and pleasure. Yet today is a day unlike any other, it is also a day of remembrance for me.

As I sit awaiting the delivery of this traitor, my mind trails back a few centuries to that fateful day I had to seek out Didyme and bring an end to her. My eyes wander over the gathering resting momentarily on Marcus for a while before turning back to the centre of the hall focusing on the reflection in the shiny tiles on the floor. The room becomes invisible to me as I am pulled back into the past – to that moment.

She was fair, lovely, and always happy; the last days of her life however was a constant expression of fear and sorrow. Her betrayal to me to our empire was her downfall. In my minds eye I see the images of her and Marcus in the garden. The one conversation that made me realise all was not as it seems. It fleetingly moves to the say in the Turret room when I touched Sulpicia's hand and saw their plans. As the memories start to run through my head like a projector playing a movie, I firmly grip the armrests on the throne. My eye meet Sulpicia's I can see her immediate concern and I avert her gaze looking over to the great doors as Felix and Demetri enters with the traitor, bound with chains.

I step forward wanting not to waist another moment. Marcus sighs a sigh of utter boredom, as I hear Caius shift in his chair greedily anticipating another successful execution. Jane's and Alec's eyes focused on the man – awaiting my command in case of some resistance.

I move my sleeves away from my hands as I look down at the imbecile his fear filled eyes locked on mine almost pleading. For a split second I see the same flash of emotion in his eyes, that I saw the many years ago looking down at Didyme. Firmly placing my hands on his head, I drain the life from him. His eyes going a pale grey color as his skin becomes stone, instantly dropping to the floor turned into a pile of dust.

Moving back to my throne turning to look over the gathering I speak before taking my place.

"So it shall be known. Those who threaten to reveal the truth about our existence or defy our kind and our rules will so perish accordingly. This message is to be sent to all covens world wide."

Sitting down I take a moment to recollect my thoughts, momentarily asking myself – "What if we the Volturi did not exist?"

And I could come up with one answer to sum it all up.

Upheaval

This is why we are here, why the guard is appointed and why the Masters are the keepers of the laws of ancients.

Once a Master or his Mate, you can never leave. Your loyalty lies with the Volturi. And for this simple reason, the small sacrifice was made to remove the stumbling block from Marcus' life.

My dear sister Didyme, my own blood, betrayed the law by wanting to leave – a breech of an eternal contract not to be broken. And for that reason her life was not to be spared.
