Just Tonight

Just tonight I will stay
And we'll throw it all away
When the light hits your eyes
It's telling me I'm right
And if I, I am through
And it's all because of you
Just tonight

He'd looked so miserable that night. She didn't even have the slightest fraction of an idea to why she followed him out to the courtyard, but something in her heart tugged her away from the music and towards him. It was unusual that he left in the first place. The life of the party had died and left the Hall. It was almost pathetic, him standing out in the chill, mumbling to himself when he should have been occupied spiking the punch or singing the wrong words to the band.

She caught her name and hid behind the door. It had fallen out of his mouth in a string of obscenities and a few frustrated groans. He was upset with her. Her. How? She hadn't so much as breathed at him since the start of the year. She ignored him completely and started seeing someone else.

Was she making him jealous? He didn't get jealous. He could have his pick of any girl, but it was her he was stuck on. Her, just a blank face in a uniformed crowd, had caught his eye. It was going on years ago and yet he never gave up. He was the one constant, nagging in the back of her head. A routine, a familiar face to pick out in a clouding world. He was safe.

"James?"

He turned around and cleared his throat loudly, pretending to frisk himself for a cigarette. He didn't smoke. That was Sirius.

"Hello Evans. Fancy a some fresh air?"

She nodded and approached him cautiously, like she was tip-toeing around a sleeping baby. "It's too crowded in there."

They stood for a moment in silence before he found the cigarettes and offered her one.

"No, thank you. I don't smoke."

"Neither do I. These are Sirius'. He didn't want to get caught again. Last time he ended up in the headmaster's office and they sent a letter to my parents. Dad wasn't upset in the least, but mum flipped. I told him that, that, - well, better get back inside."

He began to walk from her, and she saw her heart shrinking with every step he made to the door.

"Wait, James."

It was never her intention to follow him out.

But one dance, just tonight, couldn't hurt.

AN: (disregard and skip to the end if you don't read any of my other stories) so I haven't had a word processor for about a month now, and for Christmas I got Microsoft Word, so expect an update for both Hope and Laugh if Off, and maybe Into the Night if I get around to it.

Thank you for reading! If you wouldn't mind leaving some critique on your way out, it would be greatly appreciated!
