Movie Night
James was sitting on the couch intently studying the screen of the laptop he was balancing on his lap; Jack was spread out in the recliner sleepily flipping through channels on the television. They had spent a busy day and were now relaxing in the living room before turning in for the night.
Jack rousted a little in his chair, "Oye, here we go James, you ought to enjoy this."
"What's that Jack?" James said absently not looking away from the screen on his lap.
"This movie mate," Jack answered as he waved the remote at the television, "saw it once awhile ago. Bout a group of scalliwags."
James peered over at Jack and with a bit of humor and a twitch of the corners of his mouth, "Do you not think I have dealt with enough scallywags in my life in the past Jack? Not to mention the one I am dealing with now?"
Jack smiled back as he said, "No. But if you give a bit of attention to this movie I'm sure you'll find it enjoyin. It's almost a classic, called High Wind in Jamaica."
"Very well Jack, I will watch for awhile, with the understanding if I find it not to my liking I will be allowed to return to my perusal of the internet undisturbed."
"Agreed!" Jack said as he picked up the bottle of rum sitting by his side and joined James on the couch. James set the laptop aside, kicked his shoes off, leaned back on the couch and put his feet up on the ottoman.
"I know yer really going to like this James. You want me to go get us some popcorn or snacks, M&M's or something?"
"No Jack, I am fine. Maybe later." James said as he made himself a bit more comfortable.
As the movie started Jack started a running commentary about what was happening.
After several minutes of this James looked over at him, cleared his throat and said good naturedly but with a bit of firmness, "I am perfectly capable of understanding what is going on Jack, this is after all set in an era I am more than a bit familiar with."
"Oh yes, so you are. Very well then, no more talking, how'd that be?" Jack said with a flop of his hand.
"That would be most appreciated Jack." James replied with a raised eyebrow directed at Jack.
A few moments later James snorted as Jack began to speak, "Just wanted to add here James for you to be watching one of the characters that's about to come on the scene. Reminds me a bit of you really. An actor by the name of Davenport. I believe his first name is Nagel or Norgel….no wait Nigel that's it. Nigel Davenport, rather an imposin sort, much like you used to be."
"I shall be sure and watch for this fellow, that is if I am allowed to keep my attention on the screen rather than your chattering." James snarked.
"I swear on pain of death me lips are sealed from this moment on till the credits roll at the end James." Jack said with one hand over his heart and the other making a locking motion at his lips.
James had become rather interested in the movie and it took awhile to realize that Jack had been true to his word and had not uttered a sound. The reason for this became apparent when James felt Jack's head leaning against his shoulder and heard him softly snoring. James thought about hoisting the man up and taking him to his room, but the movie was rather interesting and he was loath to miss any of it. So instead he gently maneuvered Jack so the man's head was cradled in his lap and went back to his viewing. And with a smile he admitted to himself Jack had been right, this Davenport fellow was a bit like him.
