Notice Me
He just wanted to be noticed. If they noticed poor Matthew it would all be better. But, NO. Nobody noticed Matthew.
Arthur and Francis. They were the two people who had raised him for so long, until he was a country himself. They at least remembered who he was. Unlike most people.
And then there was Alfred, stupid Alfred. His brother and his TWIN at that didn't even remember. Was it that hard for somebody to notice him? Did anyone even care?
He thought of taking Toris' example. Sure, he had the highest suicide rate in his country, but he still had a good idea. It's not like anybody will notice if I'm gone, he told himself, so maybe…if I just…no, that's not a good branch… He looked all around the forest, trying to find a sturdy tree. With his current weight, it wouldn't be too hard. Matthew would just disappear without a trace. Then, he would be out of everybody's way for good.
If it weren't for Ivan.
"Its hard trying to kill yourself," Toris had told him, "at least, with Felix around." But, Matthew thought, I don't have anyone like Toris has Felix. Maybe this will be easier, as long as nobody noti- but his thoughts were shattered when someone grabbed his hand, taking hold of the ropes Matthew was carrying.
"What's this? Little Matvey has rope for what reason?" Matthew looked at the taller nation, who was looking at the rope. Matthew thought of taking the rope and running, but figured it would be a miracle if he took the rope. "Uh, I-Ivan, I kind of need that s-so um…can I-"
"Нет I understand what Matvey is trying to do. You won't miss anyone?" How can I, he told himself, if nobody…but…Ivan…he…noticed…
Matthew clung to the taller nation, nuzzling into the warmth of the tan coat. He could clearly smell vodka, and just a hint of sunflower. He could feel tears coming to the corners of his eyes as he heard Ivan's voice: "I would miss you, Matvey." And if the young Canadian decided to take his life again it would be if Ivan walked away.
He finally understood love, both of them.
And nothing could ever take that away.
