The truth of a situation is often found in its details.
To find those details he had to look underneath the underneath; see something for what it really is, and not what it appears to be.
A medical case – deceit, denial, and lies upon lies until finally the truth is revealed.
The patient will deceive not only himself but everyone around him; lie to protect himself and others. Whether out of guilt, embarrassment, or for some other reason he thinks will comfort him at night.
Deny truths to avoid going into unknowns.
And these unknowns were all unique. Some were inevitable; sometimes there's choice.
Sometimes he wants to go into that unknown but is unsure if the other is willing to follow.
And then - unarmed and unready - it presents itself on bended knee, a ring in hand, and a challenge in the eyes.
And everything changes. The focus shifts somehow. A moment of clarity, an opening of eyes.
In the end, the patient is forced to face his contradictions; to own up in order to save himself, to make a decision. A false truth will only kill him if he continues to hide behind it.
He's seen it hundreds, if not thousands of times. Caught; with nowhere left to run. Life and death both waiting with open arms.
And details by themselves are almost always insignificant, but together they make the whole picture; adding up to equal something more. Those indicators and signs. All that is said, all that is unsaid. Never said.
Can he see it for what it is, what it isn't, or what it could be?
Suddenly no longer a fleeting idea in the back of the mind, but a growing, very real possibility.
And he couldn't really stay half way with this. Not forever.
He could do one of two things; ignore it and forget it or reach out and take it.
He watches Wilson, waits until he stops with his singing, as he looks off to nothing in particular and then over to him.
They look at each other; Wilson raises his eyebrows, challenging him once again.
He wants to try going into that unknown now.
He offers a smile, "I never answered your question."
