There is a lot of things Hayner is. He is stubborn and hot-headed, but he is also always loyal and true to his friends. He is blunt and abrasive, and he hates losing as much as he hates Olette's cooking. (Let me just tell you-- she burns her toast daily.) Hayner is stupid sometimes, but then he is smart, too, just not in the way you'd think of.
There is also a lot of things Hayner is not. He is not the type of guy to bail on something meaningful to him. He is not book-smart and he isn't top-in-his-class. Hayner isn't a promise-breaker, and he hates the people that are. He isn't always the most responsible person around, and he is almost never on time to something important.
Hayner is and is not a lot of things, he is not perfect, but he is happy. Happy with his life, his family, his friends, and most of all, Hayner is happy with himself.
And so, despite all his flaws, that is why his friends love him. Because he is real, and because he is happy.
