May 26th, 1999
Yokohama, Kanagawa (Japan)
That night, the wealthy and well-known Kikuta family was throwing a party in their huge mansion, situated in the centre of Yokohama.
They were celebrating the success of an important cooperation with the Louvre in Paris, and soon many of its painting were due to be shipped to the Kikuta Museum set in Tokyo. Whether permanently or just temporarily, that was still to decide; yet what they had achieved till now was already worthy of admiration.
"To future successes of our companies!" Kikuta Ryuu said, raising his glass and starting the toast.
The other participants, over fifty, did the same, echoing his words as if they were only one voice before drinking.
A woman neared him and gently pecked his cheek. "I'm so proud of you, dear husband."
Maria Vadla was a Russian woman, expert in economical business. She had met Ryuu for the first time in Moscow thanks to work, and they had fallen in love. Soon they had settled down there, deciding to build a family. They had moved to Japan less than a year before, just after their only daughter Hirari had become four years old.
Ryuu smiled lovingly at her.
"You know I'd never managed it without your support." He said softly. "Is Hirari sleeping?"
His wife nodded; not too much time earlier, before the party had started, she had tucked their child in bed, and the little girl, as usual, had fallen asleep at once.
The time passed by quickly as everyone enjoyed themselves. They chatted, discussed of business as well as trivial things, repeatedly congratulated the man who had accomplished such greatness.
Yet that laughter and happiness was not destined to last long.
Outside, a group of people dressed entirely in black as to blend themselves better with the darkness neared the mansion before splitting up.
A half ran circumnavigated the mansion quietly, aiming at a backdoor; the other one headed to the main doors. When they were forcefully opened, no alarm rang.
There was a momentary freeze from the guests as those people entered the hall in which the party was held, taken by surprise.
The leader smirked. "Yaru na… Let us make this party more lively, shall we?"
Hirari woke up suddenly, opening her big, innocent blue eyes. She yawned and sat up, looking around a bit confused.
Her room was still dark, out of the window some stars could be seen. She yawned, feeling sleepy. It was rare for the child to awaken during nighttime.
And suddenly, she felt it. The reason, the cause that abruptly stopped her peaceful sleep.
Instead of the usual very faint, relaxing music and chatting voices that reigned during her parents' parties, another kind of sound could be heard.
Screams.
High-pitched voices, male and female, were screaming in terror.
And laughter.
But not the graceful laughs of the ladies, or the deep friendly ones of the men; no, they were evil. And creepy. They gave goose bumps to the little girl.
Hirari knew what was happening. She could feel them, like she had already been able to since the day she was born. They were downstairs, invading her family's peaceful domain.
She quickly climbed down from her bed and ran out of her room, her pale blue nightgown waving as she hurried down the stairs.
She suddenly stopped once arrived at the hall where the party was supposed to be.
Where earlier the buffet had taken place, the tables were now arranged in disorder, food all over the nearby floor or even the walls.
But what really made her blood freeze, it was the bodies. The guests' bodies were all scattered around the room, placed in unnatural poses. And all of them, with no exception, were full of blood, their flesh torn open.
"Ah~ Finally here, mh?"
Hirari yelped as someone was suddenly behind her. She turned and looked up, seeing a man with light brown hair at shoulder's length.
"… Vampire." The child whispered, her eyes wide as she saw him covered in blood.
The man blinked and looked at her curiously. "How do you know?"
"I can see you." She simply answered. Her voice was weirdly calm, but her heart beat wildly and she was like frozen in place, unable to move.
The Vampire watched her puzzled for a moment before smirking. "Oh… So you're the famous Scanner, mh?" he chuckled.
"Do not fear, uncle Taki will make sure it will be over quickly." That said, he lunged at her.
Hirari shut her eyes tightly, expecting some kind of pain.
Yet nothing harmed her. After a few moments she opened them slightly, and yelped scared as she saw the Vampire's face right in front of her, his eyes wide in terror and surprise. He gurgled, blood coming out from his throat and his chest, where a round wound was. Actually, a bloody hand retreated in that moment from his chest, leaving a hole.
The Vampire fell to the ground, looking up at his aggressor. "Y-Yukimura…" he murmured before life left him.
Said person, a tall man with wavy navy hair and female delicate traits, shook the blood off his hand.
"Too late, once again…" he sighed, before blinking and looking down as something had grabbed his leg.
It was little Hirari, who had hugged it as hard as she could; she looked up at him with her blue, now teary eyes. She sniffled lightly.
"You… Aren't you afraid of me?" the man asked in a surprised tone.
She shook her head. "You are a good Vampire." She only muttered in response.
He chuckled softly and picked her up gently, holding her close to him.
The little girl snuggled to him, seeking warmth and comfort.
Yukimura glanced around the room one last time before disappearing with her.
