AN: This is my first ever Walking Dead story so please be kind. I am new to the characters and such and I just recently got in to the show. Basically this is just a drabble trying out some of my favorite characters.
When Sofia died everything changed. Nobody said anything about it of course for fear of upsetting Carol who had already lost so much already, but everyone could tell. Carol was colder and less attached. Rick worried when she pulled away, but he had so much on his plate he just did not have time to help her. Besides Daryl was closest to her out of everyone and so he would hope that maybe Daryl could help her when nobody else could and if not, well he would deal with it if the situation arose.
Words had never really been a part of the relationship Daryl and Carol had. Oh they would talk, but usually it was meaningless. In a world where everything went to hell overnight serious wasn't something anyone really wanted to deal with. Mostly it was nice to just be in someone's company and that is what they offered each other. Carol never pushed him talk about his brother and he never pushed her to talk about anything. Maybe that is one of the reasons it was so easy to talk when they wanted. With no pressure it was easier to open up.
Of course things weren't always simple between the two. Their relationship was complicated at the best of times. Honestly who wanted to get close to someone when everybody around you was dying? The apocalypse wasn't exactly the best time to try and date, but sometimes something is started that cannot be stopped. Sometimes you meet someone and everything changes though it doesn't always change for the better. It is much like flipping a coin and choosing heads or tails. You never know what side of the coin you are going to get.
Carol and Daryl were a lot like a coin in regards to personality. Carol always wanted to help those around her even when they outright refused the help, which Daryl had done many times. She was forever the mother trying to fix problems that weren't hers because fixing other people's problems was easier than fixing your own. Daryl on the other hand tended to stay out of people's business in order to keep them out of his. He didn't even let his brother in most of time when he had been around, but there was something about Carol. He just couldn't seem to keep her away no matter how hard he tried and boy did he try.
Sometimes he found himself just watching her for no reason in particular. He did not know why he did this and it wasn't as if he knew what he was doing, it just seemed to happen. Hers was the first face he would seek out in a dangerous situation. She was the first person he would check on after coming back from a run. Carol. It always came back to her and he did not understand why. Having never really known love in his life he wasn't sure if that is how he felt for her or not. Was it even possible for someone like him to love?
There were times when he caught her looking at him as well and he knew without a doubt that she knew how he felt even if he didn't. When their eyes would meet as was almost as if everything was normal. It was like they lived in a world where walkers did not exist and they hadn't been tainted by death. Daryl knew it was dangerous to think in such a way, especially in the world they now found themselves living in, but sometimes it was nice to pretend. Carol and Daryl were unconventional, but it worked for them and everything they ever needed to say could be said in one simple look. Sometimes a look was all it took.
The End!
