Chapter 1
We were waiting for the time when Olaf would collect us for the play. The man with the hooks for hands came in with another man with a tray for lunch. I had been thinking about a way to help my siblings, and the only way I could do that was to go along with Olaf's plan. "Sir, if Count Olaf isn't too busy, I would like to speak with him alone."
"I will tell Olaf though I don't know if he'll allow it." The man with hooks for hands responded.
"Tell him it is in regards to the play tonight. I would like to speak to him about my part as the bride."
He nodded and they left. My siblings were looking at me with a confused expression. I just shook my head at them and then looked out the widow passed where Sunny was dangling in the cage. Thirty minutes later, the man with the hooks for hands came into the tower and motioned for me to follow him. I followed him and was led to Olaf's bedroom, taking a deep breath, I entered. The room was filthy; I inwardly shuddered at what I would have to clean from now on. Olaf was standing by a window watching me. He motioned for me to sit on the bed. "So my dear Violet, what do you wish to speak with me about?"
"I have an offer for you." He raised an eyebrow at me silently telling me to continue. "If you would agree to keep my siblings and myself alive and safe, then in return I will be your willing wife. I will act as a happy, loving wife. I will sleep in your bed with you, though I ask you to be patient with me in regards to actually having sex with you." He looked at me and then he told me to prove it. So I rose from the bed walked to Count Olaf put my arms around him and then I kissed him on the lips. He deepened the kiss by running his tongue along my lips; I obliged him. When he pulled away, he grinned at me and put his hand on the back of my neck underneath my hair bringing his mouth to my ear and whispering that we had a deal.
That night I signed my name at the bottom of the marriage license and he announced our marriage to the audience. Justice Strauss was crying when she found out that it was a legal marriage contract that would be recognized by the state. The curtains closed and I went to her. She kept apologizing until I irritably told her to stop. "Justice Strauss I knew what was going to happen tonight and I signed the contract willingly. We made a deal, and he has assured me that as long as I keep up my end of the bargain then he will as well. I hope this doesn't change anything between us; I would love to be able to still come and visit with you." She shook her head and replied that I was more than welcome to visit and that she would find a way to apologize for marrying me to Olaf. I gave her a small smile and then I left her as Olaf had come up to me and told me it was time to go.
