Nostalgia
To Sirius Black, the dormitory smelled something like comfort. Comfort doesn't have a definite smell. But if it did, it would smell like the dormitory used to -- like quidditch kits and teenage boy.
The floor was once littered with dirty argyle socks, broken quills, and bits of spare parchment yellowed with age. A veritable carpet of detritus. A musty scent always lingered in the air and it had become familiar over the years. Much like the drawer where Remus neatly organised his ties. They'd learned to move gracefully through the dormitory, navigating around piles of lewd magazines (James's) and essays unfinished (Peter's). It had been almost second nature.
Sirius inhales, scratching at his neck, a heavy suitcase in his hands. (Its contents belong mostly to his fellow Marauders. Over the span of seven years, their personal effects have become irreparably combined.) His eyes sweep over the room, which looks naked and empty and wrong. Just outside the window, summer beckons, promising freedom. With a sad smile, he steps over the threshold and into the hallway. The door softly swings shut behind him.
