On New Year's Eve, his friend, Genichirou, handed him a plain white box.

"From my mother." His serious friend explained.

So, Renji thanked him and opened the lid. Boxes like these made them appear especially like coffins. As if people weren't supposed to trash these vessels once they extracted the gifts and presents inside. That they were supposed to hold on to these coffin-like boxes till the items they originally contained returned in broken or unusable conditions.

Inside the container lied a six inch tall red daruma doll with gold, black and red paint adorning its countenance. A pair of blank, white circles (supposedly eye sockets) looked at him, urging him to paint its eyes in.

He extracted the lightweight object. Musing for a moment, Renji picked up the calligraphy brush Genichirou gave him for his birthday and painted a smaller black circle inside the left white socket.

Renji left the other socket blank (1).

(1) - A brand new daruma doll should have two blank white circles in place of its eyes. When you make a wish, you paint its anatomical left eye. If the wish ever comes true, you would fill in the other eye.
