SPEAKING IN SILENCE

"Hush little baby, don't say a word"

Midnight was silence, it always had been.

"Papa's gonna buy you a mocking bird."

There was no room for thought; there was no room for fear. All the pain and despair was smothered in silence. Only whispers of song bore witness in the night.

"And if that mocking bird won't sing..."

The door eased open like it always did, soundless and soulless...then darkness swept in.

"And it won't sing...will it my dear?"

A cruel, black shadow stood tall in the door, then walked in so softly the floor didn't creak. Only whispers of sing-song were heard in the night.

He lay ever so still as this 'father' approached, rough hands drawing back the blankets and sheet.

"You know how your mother would cry if she knew."

Yes, he knew. How he knew. She would be sad -- oh so sad -- that Da loved him so much, that he touched him each night instead of her.

That's what Da told him. That's how he knew.

His teeth clenched in silence when the air touched his skin. His da touched his skin, his da stripped him bare, his da turned him over onto his front.

"She would cry and she'd cry, and maybe leave us for good."

He didn't want that to happen, he loved Mother so much.

And so he lay still as Da touched his skin and moved his fingers where they shouldn't be. It hurt, oh it hurt, but he couldn't cry out.

Mother would leave him. Mother would cry. Mother would hurt more than this ever did, and so he would bear it and never cry out, though he could feel himself almost split into two.

It hurt so much, so so so much. He bit through his lip just to stifle his cry as something pushed into him, big and hard. He wished it would stop, it pained him so much and he felt something wet running down his young legs. A tear-stained face buried itself in the pillow and small little hands clamped over his ears.

The sound of low grunts almost made him sick, tied as they were to that horrible pain, but just he couldn't seem to drown them out. He could still feel them.

With one last shove, it was over and done, the pain eased up, the silence crashed down and shadows gave way to the comfort of night with only a whisper that lingered in fear.

"Hush little baby..."

No matter what, there was always the fear.

"Hush..."

OWARI

::winces:: well...that was dark and disturbing enough.
