This poem was an assignment for a creative writing class. We had to write a poem from the point of view of a member of the opposite sex. I chose to write one as John Coffey. I fell in love with his character even before we learned the truth about him, so it seemed perfect for me to write a poem as him.
Please be nice if you review, this is my first Green Mil/Stephen King fanfic. Well, it's technically a poem, but you get it.
Disclaimer: I don't own John Coffey or any other character mentioned in the poem. Or the Mile. Or anything in quotes. If it looks like it's not mine, it's not. Kay:)
Mourning Coffey
"Like the drink, only not spelled the same way."
That 'us how I introduced myself.
Every time.
No one forgets my name that way.
It's a simple name anyway.
A simple name for a simple man.
A simple man in jail for a not-so-simple crime.
But… "I couldn't help it. I tried to take it back, but it was too late."
I 'us scared goin into that room.
There were bars all around me an' I just didn't fit.
It was a scary an' strange place in there.
"I get a little scared of the dark if it's a strange place."
Boss told me there'd be a light on for me.
At least I 'us never alone there. I had Del an' Wild Bill for company.
Boss an' Brutal an' Harry an' Dean were all there too.
Boss prayed for me when my time came.
"Baby Jesus, meek and mild
Pray for me, an orphan child
Be my strength, be my friend
Be with me until the end. Amen."
I walked the Mile, just like Del.
There 'us so much hate in the room.
All sent to me.
I could feel it hurt me, probably more than the shock did.
I barely noticed them strapping me up
Or the brine running down my chin to greet
The gravy stain on my shirt.
"I'm sorry for what I am."
Boss 'us the last thing I saw.
Then it 'us dark.
But there 'us still a light on in the corner.
I guess Jesus heard my prayer an' put in
A night light for me.
