First Divergent fanfic! Squeee! This is basically just a pretty short oneshot on the first Dauntless-born initiate to die, and a bit on Rita, who seemed super torn up after she fell off that ledge.
Anyways, I don't own Divergent; it belongs to Veronica Roth. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy!

I peek my head around the train's opening from where I stand right next to it. Wind flies past my face, teasing my long, dark hair into knots, and I almost shout with exhilaration. I feel breathless and giddy.
"We're almost there!" I call to the other Dauntless in my train car. I look over my shoulder at Rita and grin at her. She smiles back toothily.
Enthusiasm bubbles up in my chest. This is the first time that I will be entering the Dauntless compound as an initiate to my faction. Rita is as excited as I am.
I've known Rita for as long as I can remember. In some ways we are opposites- I have auburn hair, she has blonde; I have pale gray eyes, she has vibrant green- but we basically share a mind, sort of like twins, or even soulmates.
"Jump!" The Dauntless two cars ahead of us yell, leaping out of the train in waves.
I see the first person jump out of the car in front of us and a slight shiver, hardly noticeable, goes down my back.
Rita grabs my fingers and gives them a small squeeze. Neither of us need reassurance, we've been doing this every time we came home from school, for too many years to count, but it's nice to have something to hold on to.
We go and line up together, our hands still clasped, and almost immediately it is time to jump.
Rita and I launch ourselves off of the train together. Our hands lose each other in the movement around us, but after a moment we are both standing on the roof.
Rita turns to smile at me, a sort of "hey, we're not dead!" kind of smile, but then my arms cartwheel all over the place and my I fall off the edge, dragged down by an invisible force.
My slender body falls through the air, gravity pulling me down. The wind, once playful and light, now tears at my clothes and shrieks in my ears.
I crash onto the ground and feel horrible, agonizing pain for all of a second before everything jolts into darkness. The faint scream of a woman feels as though it is ripping into my soul. I have the strange feeling that the sound is Rita.
Good-bye, Rita.

and then shes gone. just like that. one moment she was grasping my hand, the next she was lying broken on the ground like a rag doll, seven stories below me.
even in death she is graceful. although her limbs lie all around her in impossible angles, her willowy build is elegant, and her hair fans around her head like a halo.
i am faintly aware of caden holding me back, preventing me from jumping down to be closer to her. the other initiates are staring but i dont care.
i look up at the sky and an animal-like, guttural cry launches out of my throat.
good-bye, nikki.
