Beedi Diselva:
I entered the Foster System when I was six years old. My parents had been killed in a car crash that left me without my left arm from the elbow down. I never actually got a prosthetic arm because I didn't see the need to have one, nor did I want one,
I liked myself the way I was. My foster family's just saw me as a way to get more money in their pockets, since I was disabled that meant more money every month from the government for taking care of me. I had had an extraordinary life up until then.
My family was always traveling, from one country to the next. You see, my folks were zoologists and they studied all types of animal behavior so that just meant that I had the best schooling ever, well at least that was how I saw it. I was born in
India; hence my first name, but we were American Citizens. We had been visiting San Diego when the crash had happened and since I didn't know of any relatives, I was put into the system.
It wasn't until I was ten did I truly understand what my parents had left me. My social worker showed up one day with a suitcase full of stuff that had been in the car when it had crashed. The suitcase had my name on it and the police had finally released
it from the evidence locker, believing that I would want some of my personal belongings back, along with whatever my parents had packed inside. What the police or my social worker didn'tknowwas that the suitcase was filled with clues as
to where a treasure was. My parents had wanted me to know of my lineage even if they weren't around to tell me about it. They had left the suitcase for me to find and follow the clues to what they had really left me. My gift was waiting for me to
hunt down; I just needed the right Foster Family to understand that.
When I turned thirteen, I was placed with the Adams-Foster family and their brood of five kids. They seemed like nice enough people, though I got the feeling that they would rather not have me as a burden to them. When I assured them that I would not
be a burden and that at my last school was on the soccer team, they seemed to be impressed. In all actuality, I was the captain of the soccer team and was fairly good at the game. Not having one arm had my balance off a little, but it never seemed
to mind because that just meant my kicks were harder, at least in my mind. I was at the Adams-Foster home for nearly three months before I decided to share my 'gift' with the family and ask for their help in achieving the goal. I would need everyone's
help because I believed they would also benefit from the experience. If they agreed, they it would be one hell of an adventure. And if they didn't agree, then I would have to find a way to do it on my own. But I was hoping that they would agree and
that we would get some good family bonding moments out of it. Besides, summer was coming up and everyone could do with a little time out of the city.
Will the Adams-Foster's agree to the scavenger hunt? And will Beedi finally figure out what her parents left her? Will her lineage be revealed in the end?
