"Lucy, you're looking good today."
"You always look beautiful, but I have to agree that today you're something else."
Lucy laughed as she set two plates on the table before her. "You're too kind," she said with the sweetest smile she could muster. "Enjoy your meal you two." She bowed before scurrying back to the kitchen.
"You're getting a lot of attention," Natsu, the chef, laughed, setting a few more plates of food on the counter.
Lucy rolled her eyes and threw her serving platter in the sink. She undid her hair tie, letting her hair fall loose. "Waitressing isn't the best, but I guess it'll do for now."
"You're trying to make it as an author, right?" Natsu asked. She hummed in response. "Working at a run-down cafe like 8-Island isn't exactly that, huh?" The food he was cooking sizzled as he stirred it around.
"Sorry I'm late," Kinana said, entering the back room. She was the night waitress.
"It's alright," Lucy said. She went to the back room to change out of her uniform. She put on a green tank top and jean shorts. After saying goodbye to Natsu, she went outside.
The night air was crisp and cool. The wind was blowing, causing her hair to flutter. She squinted as her eyes adjusted to the low lighting. It was almost nine o'clock, so she knew that she needed to get home. Her curfew was ten, one set by her brother.
She was almost halfway home when she felt someone roughly grab her arm. She spun around and came face-to-face with the two guys from the cafe. Wiggling her arm was a failed attempt to get away.
"I was right. You do look cuter being in my arms," the guy who had ahold of her spoke. He jerked her towards him.
"No! Leave me alone!" she yelled, struggling against his grip. She could feel her skin bruising.
"If we let you go you'll just run away," the second man said. "And wouldn't want that, would we?"
"You bastards!" a new voice yelled. The sound of running filled empty streets. In the blink of an eye, both men were on the ground, groaning in pain.
Lucy looked up to see her savior. Her eyes widened. The guy had raven hair that blew in the wind, deep blue eyes, and a sharp jawline. He was wearing a suit with the tie loose and his shirt half unbuttoned.
"If I see you two around I'll beat the shit out of ya! Now scram!" The two men jumped up and ran off. He smiled and turned to Lucy. "Are you alright? My name's Gray Fullbuster."
"Lucy Heartfilia," she said, shaking his hand. "Thanks for saving me."
And on that cool night, the wind blowing her hair around in every possible direction, she met the man she would fall in love with without even trying.
