A Month Later . . .
" Caitlin ! It's five past eight ! You better be getting ready right now, young lady. " I heard Grandmother Anne's high-pitched voice coming from, where she always spent her mornings, in the kitchen.
I was already ready. I wasn't a person who was always late. I was always ready five minutes before everyone else. I didn't like being waited after. I wore my favorite torn on the knees jeans and a sleeveless gray tank top. Before he had left, I hated wearing clothes that made me look like I couldn't take care of myself but now I didn't care. Looks didn't matter much to me anymore. Looks will always just be looks for me. Nothing will ever compare to his stunning beauty.
Even if I wasn't downstairs in front of Anne, I knew what was she was doing. She always did the same thing everyday, anyway. I smelled the pancakes from my bedroom and inhaled the scent as if it will go away in a matter of seconds. The house was now filled with a sweet scent of strawberry. My favorite.
It was the first day of my junior year in high school. I wanted it all to be perfect now that Scorpius has left me. His departure changed me. This year, my goal wasn't to get a boyfriend but to get excellent grades so I can go to London this summer.
Grandmother Anne told me that some relatives of ours wanted us to visit them but Anne, witty old Anne, made sure that I had a perfect school year before I went out of the country. I didn't argue. I never did anymore, since he left. He completely changed me and I asked myself, if he was ever going to know that.
Don't think about it, I told myself. He's gone. Nothing's going to change that.
" I'm coming, Grandma ! " I replied with a normal tone. I wasn't sure if she had heard me but she didn't have to. She knew I would come.
I grabbed my ocean blue Jansport beside my door and walked down the stairs, slowly. I loved doing everything slow. It's just better and more tasteful.
As I turned to my left to walk through to the living room then to the kitchen, our house bell rang. The long and deep ding's reminded me of the town church. It sounded like the sound that played when people were going to get buried. But it was still beautiful, in it's own way. That's why Anne and I kept the bell.
From the another side of the door, a dog barked as if it wanted his owner and stratched the door. It was rare to hear a dog bark, and I opened the door with curiosity.
A tall guy with too much gel, stood in front of me. He was smiling and it showed his braces. He wore thick glasses, had pimples here and there and had a poor complexion. He wore black sweat pants and an oversized sweater with Harvard written on it in huge white square letters.
It was too obvious : he was a geek. I smiled to that thought. Another guy who wants to ruin me, great. Her smile faded a little bit. But it was his expression that made my smile completely disappear.
" What? " I asked, I frowned. I noticed the dog pee on Anne's hydrangeas in the right corner of my eye. I looked up at him and he still had the same surprised expression.
" What ? " I repeated annoyingly. " Are you going to answer me ? I have to - "
" Who is that, Cate? The Newmans? The Whites? " Grandmother Anne asked from, once again, the kitchen.
I heard her cracking an egg and the sound of the egg when it landed on the pan. I turned around and yelled randomly, " He just moved in ! "
" Well, ask him to come in ! " Grandmother replied happily.
I turned around and frowned. He was gone. The dog was gone. I frowned. I could he have left without me hearing his footsteps?
