[Author's Note: This fic is based loosely on the characters and concepts of Twilight, although some details about the characters have been changed. It's been a long time since I read Twilight, but I just love the Jacob/Nessie plotline, so this story is mostly my attempt to explore that a little further. Hope you enjoy!]

Prologue

He moves towards me, shoulders bent, eyes blazing, a deep growl emulating from deep within his chest. I walk backwards, my feet tripping over roots and branches. I am knocked to the floor and scramble backwards on my hands and knees. He smiles wickedly. Behind him, I see bodies. Dozens of bodies. Pale white and piled high in a grotesque stack of limbs and blood red eyes. I turn my attention back to my attacker. He is still approaching, snarling and licking his lips with a long pink tongue. I scramble to my feet and take a final step back, only to find myself pressed against a tree. It's hopeless to run, I can only sink down lower against the trunk and pray for a distraction. My breathing comes through in sharp stabs, as if my body knows that each breath may be its last. My head is spinning, green by green by green, as the forest streaks across my brain. He is close now, so close, and with a gut-aching pang, I see his eyes. Deeper and crueller and blacker than I could ever imagine. This isn't right. I fix his gaze pleadingly and feel him pause. My heart thuds. Maybe-

"Jake… Please…"

He lunges. I scream. And then… Nothing.
