Reflections
The window before me bore my reflection. The reflection of a murderer; a failure and a nothing. What'd happened to make me this way? What'd happened to turn all of the joy I once felt into hatred, anger, and pain?
"You murdered your best friend." I muttered to the dark.
Suddenly all the shadows seemed to want to smother me. The darkness became more tangible. Covering my face with my hands, I dropped to the floor and a moan of terror escaped my lips. Afraid of my future, terrified to comfront my past.
It was all too much. I ran from the castle...perhaps hoping to escape myself. There was only one way to do that. I shifted into the form I'd chosen to take when Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs were still at large, still the Marauders- that of a great shaggy dog.
We'd been so careless back then. No worries, no frowns. Every week a new adventure, some new prank. Now it's all been destroyed. Because I'd as good as killed my best friend.
The thought tormented me, so I ran; a feeble attempt to escape it. I ran across the Hogwarts grounds, the frost nipping at my paws, until I came to the Whomping Willow.
I sat on my haunches and stared at the monsterous tree that'd kept Moony away from the world on those nights when the moon rose full and shining.
Visions of more recent times passed before my eyes....Moony and me....and Pettigrew... My hackles rose at the very thought of him and an unearthly growl escaped my throat.
Wands raised to kill him, to commit the crime I'd been incarcerated for....and then someone had told us to spare him.
My thoughts raced wildly for a moment. Brief memories of Lily and James's wedding...of the birth if their first child-Harry. Harry Potter. He was the one who'd spared Wormtail. He was the one I needed to stick around for. He for whom I needed to keep what little sanity I had left for. My godchild- Harry Potter.
Shaking myself, I headed on my way, one thought burning in my mind: Reach Moony's. Do it for Harry. So that one day he might not live in fear. Dumbledore'd said to go to Moony's... and that's just what I planned on doing.
