Natsuhiboshi Naze Mayoui?
Neji stood quietly at Tenten's grave. He would not cry. He had promised her he wouldn't cry. He knelt down, and placed a bunch of star-flowers, those flowers she had loved so well on her grave. No emotion showed on his stoic face, but on the inside was a maelstrom of emotion.
Flashback begins
Tenten, Ino, Sakura and Hinata sat around a small table, seated on cushions, in the Hyuuga compound. Hinata had poured tea for all of them, and there was a plate of sweet sesame snacks in the middle.
Tenten had just come back from a mission in the Bear Country, and she was worn out, guilty and sad. She just couldn't bring herself to talk more. She listened dully to Ino and Sakura chat, occasionally punctuated by a nod or "Aa," by Hinata, not quite understanding. As her mind wandered, she unconsciously started singing a song under her breath. She didn't notice all three stop their discussion to listen to her.
Unbeknownst to all of them, Hyuuga Neji stood watching in the shadows.
"Natsuhiboshi naze akai?
Yuuhbe kanashii yume wo mita.
Naite hanashita,
Akai me wo.
Natsuhiboshi naze mayoui?
Kieta warashi wo sagashitteru.
Dakara kanashii,
Yume wo miru."
(Why is the summer star red?
Last night I had a sad dream.
I was crying and talking,
With red eyes.
Why has the summer star lost its way?
I know of such childish stories.
That's why,
I have sad dreams.)
"That's sad. It's such a sad song," Ino said softly.
"Aa," nodded Hinata.
"I know," Tenten whispered. "I heard it- we heard it in Bear Country, in Hoshigakure. (Hidden village of the Star)"
"I guess that explains why it talks of the star, ne?" Sakura said quietly.
"Yes," Tenten nodded "I think Lee said the summer star is supposed to be Mars,"
"Oh," Ino exclaimed.
Tenten continued explaining in a hushed voice, tears gathering in her eyes. "We couldn't save Natsuhi, Sumaru's mother. She died. But before she did, Sumaru sang her this song. It seemed to make her go in peace,"
"It's not your fault, Tenten." Hinata said firmly, but gently. "Nobody could have stopped her from dying when she did,"
"But maybe, if I hadn't been knocked out in battle, then I could've leant my chakra to the healer, then maybe-"
"No buts," Sakura stated. "Tenten, you simply must stop blaming yourself for her death!"
Flashback ends
Tenten had never stopped blaming herself. Even in the moments before her death, with Neji holding her hand, she had said "I'm sorry Neji, for everything,"
He knew she would know that he would know she meant the mission to Bear Country.
He stood up, then his eyes widened ever so slightly in shock. He could've sworn he had heard her voice on the wind, singing, "Natsuhiboshi naze mayoui…"
His friends watched anxiously as he stiffened, then turned and stalked away.
Natsuhiboshi naze mayoui?
Kieta warashi wo sagashitteiru.
Dakara kanashii,
Yume wo miru.
Why has the summer star lost its way?
I know of such childish stories.
That's why,
I have sad dreams.
